  • Trichiasis with and without tarsal conjunctival scarring

Open Access•Esmael Habtamu, Caleb Mpyet et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

There has been discussion regarding the definition of the clinical sign trachomatous trichiasis (TT) for the purposes of determining elimination of trachoma as a public health problem, and whether the definition should include the presence of trachomatous scarring (TS). A multi-country observational study was conducted in Ethiopia, Uganda and Nigeria to assess whether TS grading by field graders using the WHO simplified system in trachoma surveys…

  • The cost of mass drug administration for trachoma in two counties of the Republic of South Sudan

Open Access•Tim Jesudason, Angelia M Sanders et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Community-wide distribution of azithromycin, otherwise known as mass drug administration (MDA), is a component of the World Health Organization-endorsed SAFE strategy for the elimination of trachoma as a public health problem. In the Republic of South Sudan, 2.9 million people are known to live in areas that are known to require interventions and warrant MDA. This study estimated the total costs and cost per person treated during MDA in two count…

  • How well do coverage surveys and programmatically reported mass drug administration coverage match? Results from 214 mass drug administration campaigns in 15 countries, 2008–2017

Open Access•Kathryn L Zoerhoff, Pamela Sabina Mbabazi et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2023

INTRODUCTION: Delivering preventive chemotherapy through mass drug administration (MDA) is a central approach in controlling or eliminating several neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Treatment coverage, a primary indicator of MDA performance, can be measured through routinely reported programmatic data or population-based coverage evaluation surveys. Reported coverage is often the easiest and least expensive way to estimate coverage; however, it…

  • Sex-related alcohol expectancies and high-risk sexual behaviour among drinking adults in Kampala, Uganda

Open Access•Scott D Nash, Achilles Katamba et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2015

Alcohol consumption, a risk factor for HIV transmission in sub-Saharan Africa, is considered high in Uganda. A cross sectional study was conducted to determine whether sex-related expectations about the effects of alcohol explain the association between alcohol use and risky sexual behaviours in a population-based sample of adults in Kampala. Associations between alcohol use (current and higher risk drinking) and high-risk sexual behaviours (mult…

  • Unmet Hearing Health Care Needs

Scott D Nash, Karen J Cruickshanks et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 33

Objectives. We evaluated the use of hearing health care services (hearing testing and hearing aids) by adults aged 21 to 84 years. Methods. Hearing was tested and medical and hearing health histories were obtained as part of the Beaver Dam Offspring Study between 2005 and 2008 (n = 3285, mean age = 49 years). Results. Of the cohort, 34% (55% of participants aged ≥ 70 years) had a hearing test in the past 5 years. In multivariate modeling, older a…

  • Identifying and tracing a population at risk

    S Nash, Scott D Nash et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1983•Cited by: 1•References: 14

In recent years, medical record review has been used to alert patients who have received drugs or treatments that have newly discovered side-effects. The experience of the national cooperative Diethylstilbestrol-Adenosis (DESAD) Project in identifying and notifying women exposed in utero to diethylstilbestrol (DES) shows this to be a difficult task. In order to identify 4,830 exposed women, 221,245 charts were reviewed. Detailed tracing data for …
