Modelling how age-restricted location policies would impact tobacco retailer density in four US states
The degree of TRD reduction estimated by these simulation models for an ARL policy is more powerful than what has been found for other retailer-focused strategies (eg, prohibiting tobacco retailers close to schools). ARL policies could be a promising and potentially powerful strategy for reducing TRD in the USA
Association Between Exposure to LGBTQ-Targeted Tobacco Marketing and Tobacco Use Behaviors Among US Young Adults
Background A risk factor for tobacco use among sexual and gender minority people is exposure to tobacco marketing. This study aimed to assess exposure to tobacco marketing by sexual and gender identity via general venues (e.g., bars/clubs, newspapers/magazines), determine the frequency of targeted marketing via LGBTQ venues, and examine how exposure to tobacco marketing in LGBTQ venues relates to tobacco use among sexual and gender minority young…
Identification and Classification of Images in e-Cigarette-Related Content on TikTok
Background Previous studies identified e-cigarette content on popular video and image-based social media platforms such as TikTok. While machine learning approaches have been increasingly used with text-based social media data, image-based analysis such as image-clustering has been rarely used on TikTok. Image clustering can identify underlying patterns and structures across large sets of images, enabling more streamlined distillation and analysi…
Remediated marketing
Big Tobacco and other stakeholders, such as vape shops and smaller e-cigarette manufacturers, have adapted traditional tobacco marketing techniques to digital platforms. Warning labels are essential for informing consumers about the potential harms of tobacco use, including e-cigarettes. However, in a rapidly changing digital landscape, social media platform policies often lag behind, leaving digital marketing largely unchecked. This has allowed …
Tobacco retailer density and rurality across four US states
PURPOSE: Research has demonstrated many types of disparities in tobacco retailer density (TRD), but these analyses often fail to explore rural disparities. Given the substantial burden of rural tobacco use in the USA, this is a critical gap. The purpose of the present study was to estimate rural disparities in TRD across four US states. METHODS: For the states of California, Connecticut, North Carolina, and Ohio, we used spatial statistical metho…

Content Analysis of YouTube Videos Related to E-Cigarettes and Covid-19
BACKGROUND: E-cigarettes are frequently promoted on social media and portrayed in ways that are attractive to youth. While the COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected people's lives, less is known about how the pandemic influenced e-cigarette-related marketing and information on social media. This study examined how e-cigarettes were portrayed on youtube, one of the most popular social media platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We se…
Adolescents and Young Adults Use of Social Media and Following of e-Cigarette Influencers
Background With high rates of both e-cigarette and social media use among adolescents and young adults (AYAs), social media influencers who promote e-cigarettes are particularly concerning but are understudied. We examined the association between AYAs’ use of 11 different social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube) and exposure to social media e-cigarette influencers. Objectives From November 2022 to February 20…

Tobacco-free blunt wraps
Cigars (e.g., large manufactured cigars, cigarillos) are among the most used combustible tobacco products in the U.S.[1, 2] Some of the popularity of cigars may be driven by the ability to modify them to smoke cannabis "blunts" (i.e., hollowed-out cigars filled with cannabis or a mixture of tobacco and cannabis).[3-5]Smoking blunts could expose users to greater levels of carcinogens than smoking either cannabis or tobacco alone,[6] and, among ado…
Understanding e-cigarette content and promotion on YouTube through machine learning
Our findings indicate that on YouTube videos accessible to youth, a variety of e-cigarette products are featured through diverse videos themes, with discount/sales. The findings highlight the need to regulate the promotion of e-cigarettes on social media platforms
Marketing Content on E-Cigarette Brand-Sponsored Facebook Profile Pages
Introduction: E-cigarettes are marketed on brand-sponsored Facebook profile pages despite Facebook’s policy to prohibit e-cigarette marketing on their platform. We aimed to identify e-cigarette marketing strategies used and products marketed on brand-sponsored Facebook profiles and assess whether these strategies and featured products differ by user engagement. Methods: We examined up to 10 recent Facebook posts on 26 e-cigarette brand-sponsored p…
Reasons for Electronic Cigarette Experimentation and Discontinuation Among Adolescents and Young Adults
INTRODUCTION: Understanding why young people try and stop electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use is critical to inform e-cigarette regulatory efforts. METHODS: We conducted 18 focus groups (N = 127) in 1 middle school (MS), 2 high schools (HSs), and 2 colleges in Connecticut to assess themes related to e-cigarette experimentation and discontinuation. We then conducted surveys to evaluate these identified themes in 2 MSs, 4 HSs, and 1 college (N =…
Implicit Motivational Processes Underlying Smoking in American and Dutch Adolescents
