Qualitative Evaluation of RADx-UP Projects Addressing Covid-19 Testing Disparities Among Underserved Populations
In this article, we present findings from a May 2022 to March 2023 qualitative evaluation of Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics–Underserved Populations (RADx-UP) projects addressing COVID-19 testing disparities among underserved populations. Interviews with academic and community partners from 13 RADx-UP projects revealed that despite the pandemic, projects were able to build trust and relationships with underserved populations. By prioritizing co…
Potential gaps in income support policies for those in poor health
EITC program design creates an important gap in income support for those for whom poor health limits work, which is not closed by other programs. Filling this gap is an important public health goal
Racial disparities in stroke incidence in the Women's Health Initiative
The distribution and association of stroke risk factors differed between NHAA and NHW women. There is a clear need for stroke prevention strategies that address factors driving racial disparities in stroke risk
Using a most significant change approach to evaluate learner-centric outcomes of clinical scholars leadership training program
BACKGROUND: Most significant change (MSC) analysis is an evaluative method used to supplement outcome and impact program evaluations. MSC stories provide mini-narratives contextualizing the effect a program had on an individual. The Clinical Scholars program evaluation team used MSC to explore learner-centric leadership outcomes of the Clinical Scholars leadership training program. PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH: To identify thematic outcomes of trainee…

Recognizing Cross-Institutional Fiscal and Administrative Barriers and Facilitators to Conducting Community-Engaged Clinical and Translational Research
PURPOSE: This qualitative study examined fiscal and administrative (i.e., pre- and post-award grants process) barriers and facilitators to community-engaged research among stakeholders across 4 Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) institutions. METHOD: A purposive sample of 24 key informants from 3 stakeholder groups-community partners, academic researchers, and research administrators-from the CTSA institutions at the University of N…
At-home testing to mitigate community transmission of Sars-CoV-2
This is the first large-scale, public health intervention implementing rapid, at-home SARS-CoV-2 self-testing in the United States. The program consists of a novel combination of an at-home testing program, a broad communications and community engagement strategy, an ecological study to assess impact, and a research substudy of the behavioral aspects of testing. The findings from the SYCT project will provide insights into innovative methods to m…

Defining and Measuring Community Engagement and Community-Engaged Research
Although definitions of community engagement differ among CTSAs, there seem to be more similarities than differences in the indicators and measures tracked and reported on across all definitions, perhaps owing to commonalities among program infrastructures and goals. Metrics will likely need to be specific to translational research stages. The assessment of community engagement within translational science will require increased institutional com…

Integrating Systems Science and Community-Based Participatory Research to Achieve Health Equity
Unanswered questions about racial and socioeconomic health disparities may be addressed using community-based participatory research and systems science. Community-based participatory research is an orientation to research that prioritizes developing capacity, improving trust, and translating knowledge to action. Systems science provides research methods to study dynamic and interrelated forces that shape health disparities. Community-based parti…
The Influence of Neighborhood Poverty on Blood Glucose Levels
Objectives: To examine the relationship between both individual and neighborhood level characteristics and non-fasting blood glucose levels.Study design: This study used a cross sectional design using data from the Community Initiative to Eliminate Stroke Program in NC (2004-2008). A total of 12,809 adults nested within 550 census block groups from two adjacent urban counties were included in the analysis. Methods: Participants completed a cardiov…
Healthcare Coordination and Transition for Individuals with Genetic Conditions
Applying Cognitive Interviewing to Inform Measurement of Partnership Readiness
Engaging community leaders enhanced face and content validity and served as a means to form relationships with potential community co-investigators in the future. Cognitive interviewing can enable a bidirectional approach to partnerships, starting with instrument development
