  • Hierarchy of qualities in global health partnerships

Open Access•Simone H Schriger, Agnes Binagwaho et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

Despite the exponential growth of global health partnerships (GHPs) over the past 20 years, evidence for their effectiveness remains limited. Furthermore, many partnerships are dysfunctional as a result of inequitable partnership benefits, low trust and accountability and poor evaluation and quality improvement practices. In this article, we describe a theoretical model for partnerships developed by seven global health experts. Through semistruct…

  • Relationship, partner factors and stigma are associated with safer conception information, motivation, and behavioral skills among women living with HIV in Botswana

    Open Access•Sarah A Gutin, G W Harper et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Knowledge of SC methods varied widely. While some SC methods were well known (medical male circumcision by 83%, antiretroviral therapy for viral suppression by 64%), most other methods were known by less than 40% of participants. Our final models reveal that stigma as well as relationship and partner factors affect SC information, motivation, and behavioral skills. Both internalized childbearing stigma (ß=-0.50, 95%CI:-0.17, -0.02) and perceived …

  • I’m waiting for that’

    Open Access•Sarah A Gutin, G W Harper et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2020

Safe and effective low-cost safer conception (SC) methods are increasingly available and being integrated into national guidelines in sub-Saharan African contexts. Sero-different couples of childbearing age can benefit from such services and the routine provision of SC counselling. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV acquisition to uninfected partners can reduce the chances of HIV transmission when trying to achieve pregnancy. Botswana…

  • Perspectives about childbearing and pregnancy planning amongst people living with HIV in Gaborone, Botswana

    Sarah A Gutin, G W Harper et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2020

Despite advances in clinical care, safer conception services are not utilised in many high HIV prevalence countries, including Botswana. We conducted in-depth interviews with 10 HIV healthcare providers and 10 women living with HIV to develop a deeper understanding of attitudes surrounding childbearing and pregnancy planning. Interviews were analysed using a phenomenological approach. Providers felt it was a human right and normative for women li…

  • Adherence to screening appointments in a cervical cancer clinic serving HIV-positive women in Botswana

Open Access•Francis Barchi, Samantha Winter et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

HIV-positive women in Botswana who are symptom free at initial screening may be lost to essential future screening and follow-up care without greater targeted communication regarding cervical cancer and the importance of regular screening. Strategies to reinforce health messages using cell phone reminders, appointment prompts at time of anti-retroviral drug (ARV) refills, and use of trained community workers to review cervical cancer risks may be…

  • Using partner notification to address curable sexually transmitted infections in a high HIV prevalence context

Open Access•Adriane Wynn, Corrina Moucheraud et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

The integration of STI, HIV, and antenatal care services may have contributed to most women's willingness to notify partners. However, logistical barriers to partner treatment remained. More research is needed to identify effective and appropriate strategies for scaling-up partner notification services in order to improve rates of partners successfully contacted and treated, reduce rates of STI reinfection during pregnancy, and ultimately reduce …
