  • Haemoglobin concentration thresholds that discriminate functional outcomes among children aged 6–30 months in eight countries

    Open Access•Elizabeth L Prado, Leila M Larson et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2026

Introduction The WHO cut-offs to define anaemia among children (haemoglobin, Hb <105 g/L in 6–23 months and <110 g/L in 24–59 months) are based on the distribution of Hb concentrations in a healthy population. Our objective was to identify Hb values that best discriminate functional outcomes among children aged 6–30 months. Methods We used previously compiled datasets from an individual participant data meta-analysis of effects of small quantity …

  • Associations of active commuting and leisure-time physical activity with perceived cognitive function and work ability among Finnish employed adults

Open Access•Juuso J Jussila, Anna Pulakka et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Active commuting was associated with better perceived learning ability, suggesting that its benefits may extend to brain health. Leisure-time physical activity may have even greater potential for enhancing cognitive function and work ability among employed adults

  • Distance to sports facilities and low frequency of exercise and obesity

Open Access•Auriba Raza, Anna Pulakka et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Increased distance of paid outdoor and paid indoor physical activity facilities from home and of paid outdoor facilities from work was associated with low frequency of exercise. Longitudinal and larger studies are needed to confirm our findings, particularly regarding obesity

  • Changes in non-occupational sedentary behaviours across the retirement transition

Tuija Leskinen, Anna Pulakka et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 36

BACKGROUND: Retirement is a major life transition which may influence health behaviours and time use. Little is known about how sedentary behaviour changes as a result of increased time availability after retirement. The aim of this study was to examine changes in non-occupational sedentary behaviours across the retirement transition. In addition, we examined which preretirement characteristics were associated with these changes. METHODS: The stu…

  • Height gain after two‐years‐of‐age is associated with better cognitive capacity, measured with Raven's coloured matrices at 15‐years‐of‐age in Malawi

Open Access•Tiina Teivaanmäki, Yin Bun Cheung et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2016

Stunting is a measure of chronic undernutrition, and it affects approximately 160 million children worldwide. Cognitive development of stunted children is compromised, but evidence about the association between height gain in late childhood and adolescent cognitive capacity is scarce. We aimed to determine the association between height gains at different ages, including late childhood, and cognitive capacity at 15-years-of-age. We conducted a pr…
