Proportion of fentanyl reports in illicit drug seizures and nonfatal overdose emergency department visits in the United States, 2021–2024
BACKGROUND: The increasing presence of fentanyl in the illicit drug supply has been associated with rising overdose mortality in the United States, but the extent to which it is associated with nonfatal overdose morbidity remains unknown. We examined the association between the proportion of fentanyl reports in illicit drug seizures and state-level rates of nonfatal overdose emergency department (ED) visits. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal e…
HIV-Stigmatizing Beliefs and Attitudes as a Barrier to Early PrEP Care Continuum Engagement Among People Who Inject Drugs
HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective prevention strategy, yet awareness, knowledge, and willingness to use it among people who inject drugs (PWID) remains inadequate despite widespread eligibility. Stigma, particularly HIV-stigmatizing beliefs and attitudes, may be a key barrier to engagement at early stages of the PrEP care continuum. We examine how HIV-stigmatizing beliefs and attitudes affect PrEP awareness, knowledge, and…
Proportion of Fentanyl Reports in Illicit Drug Seizures and Opioid Mortality
The study results suggest that current decline in the proportion of fentanyl reports in illicit drug seizures is associated with 9.2% of the total observed decline in mortality. Additional contributing factors may include other shifts in the drug supply not captured by fentanyl prevalence in illicit drug seizures, shifts in drug use behavior, and the effect of public health programs, interventions, and policies
Naloxone Carriage Among People Who Inject Drugs in New York City
Fentanyl Polysubstance Use Patterns and Their Associations With Hepatitis C Virus, Skin and Soft Tissue Infections, and Non‐Fatal Overdose Among People Who Inject Drugs in New York City
Correlates of duration between initial drug use and first drug injection among people who inject drugs in Iran, 2020
The transition to injection drug use among PWID in Iran often occurs within a decade of initial drug use and is influenced by demographic, social, and psychological factors. Prevention strategies should focus on early intervention for at-risk youth, address mental health needs, and leverage peer influence. Policymakers should prioritize evidence-based, multi-faceted approaches that target both individual and structural factors to delay or prevent…
The prevalence of homelessness and its associated factors among people who inject drugs in Iran
Homelessness among people who inject drugs (PWID) represents a significant and complex public health challenge. However, few studies have investigated the factors contributing to its prevalence, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa region. We aimed to determine homelessness’s prevalence and associated factors among PWID in Iran from July 2019 to March 2020 and between May and August 2023. This study analyzed data from two national sur…

Sexualized Substance Use among Female Sex Workers in Iran
Background: Female sex workers (FSWs) are at higher risk of HIV due to high-risk sexual and drug use related behaviors. This study characterized sexualized substance use among FSWs in Iran. Methods: In 2015, 1,337 FSWs were recruited from centers for vulnerable women and through outreach efforts in 13 major cities in Iran. Data were collected via face-to-face interviews from consenting FSWs on a range of socio-demographic and behavioral character…
Correlates of quality of life and mental health among youth experiencing homelessness in Iran
This study highlights that QOL and mental health among youth experiencing homelessness in Iran are concerning, particularly among those who were older, were less educated, were living on the street, and had a history of carrying a weapon. Community-based programs, including mental health care and affordable housing are needed to improve QOL and mental health among this population in Iran
Characterizing People Who Inject Drugs with no History of Opioid Agonist Therapy Uptake in Iran

HIV Prevalence and Related Behaviors Among People Who Inject Drugs in Iran from 2010 to 2020
An on-site community-based model for hepatitis C screening, diagnosis, and treatment among people who inject drugs in Kerman, Iran
Our integrated on-site community-based HCV care model within a DIC setting suggested that HCV care including HCV testing and treatment uptake can be successfully delivered outside of hospitals or specialized clinics; a model which is more likely to reach PWID and can provide significant progress towards HCV elimination among this population
Willingness to utilize supervised injection facilities among people who inject drugs in Iran
Frequency, correlates and consequences of early sexual intercourse among Iranian men who inject drugs
Reasons for Entering into Sex Work in Iran
Prevalence of substance use and associated risk factors among homeless youth in Iran
