Advancing emergency medical team classification in Mena region
Introduction: Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) provide critical surge capacity during health emergencies. While the WHO EMT Strategy 2030 envisions a world in which every country can respond rapidly, effectively, and flexibly to national emergencies, a significant gap persists in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. In this region, low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) lag in the development of classified Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs…
The 2023 floods in the Emilia-Romagna Region, Italy
In May 2023, the Emilia-Romagna Region experienced two unprecedented rainfall episodes, leading to severe flooding and landslides especially in its southernmost part, the Romagna area. This study aimed to assess the health response to the May 2023 floods in this area, by identifying the main actions undertaken in response to the floods and by highlighting criticalities and lessons learned. To achieve this objective, a retrospective qualitative ca…
Being a migrant woman during disasters
Migrants and women were among the groups most severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic disaster. By adopting an intersectional lens, it can be inferred that migrant women (MW) were particularly vulnerable to its impacts. This study aims to explore the multifaceted impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on MW living in Milan, Italy, investigating a broad spectrum of experiences. We conducted a phenomenological study using semi-structured interviews fro…
Integrating mental health into primary health care in fragile and conflict-affected settings
In 2008, the World Health Organization launched the Mental Health Gap Action Program (mhGAP) to scale up mental health care in non-specialized health care settings. Studies have demonstrated the benefits of mhGAP implementation while highlighting the need for better contextual adaptation and ongoing support. The challenge of integrating mental health into primary care is particularly noticeable in fragile and conflict-affected settings, where the…
The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on migrant women in Milan, Italy
Migrants and women were among the groups most adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic global disaster. Through an intersectional lens that considers both migrant and female identities, it can be inferred that migrant women were particularly vulnerable to the pandemic. This study aims to investigate the impact of the pandemic on migrant women living in Milan (North-West Italy), by leveraging on the accounts of a pool of key informants (KIs). W…
Health systems resilience in fragile and conflict-affected settings
Our review findings suggest that the governance-centred framework can be useful to better understand HSR in FCAS. Future HSR research should document adaptive and transformative strategies that advance HSR, particularly in relation to actions intended to promote the safety and security of health systems, the built environment for health, and the adoption of a social justice lens
Access to care in Afghanistan after august 2021
Findings outline which dimensions of access to care need resource allocation. The inability to pay for care is the most relevant barrier to access care after August 2021 and must therefore be prioritised. Women and people from the Panjshir province may require ad hoc interventions to improve their access to care
Exploring barriers to access to care following the 2021 socio-political changes in Afghanistan
Background Following the change of government in August 2021, the social and economic landscape of Afghanistan deteriorated into an economic and humanitarian crisis. Afghans continue to struggle to access basic healthcare services, making Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in the country a major challenge. The aim of this study was to perform a qualitative investigation into the main access to care challenges in Afghanistan and whether these challen…
Migrant survivors of conflict-related sexual violence accessing a specialist health service in Turin, Italy
In total, 43 interview transcripts were eligible for inclusion. All of them were related to cisgender women of Sub-Saharan origin describing different forms of violence as a driver for migration. CRSV was disclosed by 18 survivors as occurring in their home country and by 31 in transit (e.g., Libya), the most reported type being rape. 49% of the patients described adverse physical outcomes of CRSV, while 72% reported psychological sequelae. The f…
Exploring Italian healthcare facilities response to Covid-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic exerted an extraordinary pressure on the Italian healthcare system (Sistema Sanitario Nazionale, SSN), determining an unprecedented health crisis. In this context, a multidisciplinary non-governmental initiative called Italian Response to COVID-19 (IRC-19) was implemented from June 2020 to August 2021 to support the Italian health system through multiple activities aimed to mitigate the effects of the pandemic. The objective…
A Qualitative Study on the Use of the Hospital Safety Index and the Formulation of Recommendations for Future Adaptations
The Hospital Safety Index is a tool developed by the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization in 2008 and updated in 2015. Although it is the most widely used instrument of its kind to assess the level of hospital preparedness, scientific literature on its application in real life is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the use of the Hospital Safety Index to assess disaster preparedness in healthcare facilities. A re…
The Covid-19 pandemic response and its impact on post-corona health emergency and disaster risk management in Italy
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted societies, influencing countries' Health Emergency and Disaster Risk Management (H-EDRM) systems. By taking Italy as a case study, this research aimed to investigate the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the changes made to the existing H-EDRM system, with an emphasis on human resources, health service delivery, and logistics and the forward-looking strategies for the next hea…
Primary health care disaster preparedness
With the publication of the Health Emergency and Disaster Risk Management (H-EDRM) Framework in 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasized the need for disaster preparedness in all sectors of the health system, including primary health care (PHC). PHC disaster preparedness plays a crucial role in guaranteeing continuity of care and responding to the health needs of vulnerable populations during disasters. While this is universally ackno…
Medical students’ education in disaster medicine
Disaster Medicine (DM) is currently underrepresented in medical schools’ curricula worldwide, and existing DM courses for medical students are extremely heterogeneous due to the lack of pragmatic and standardized guidelines. Moreover, there is a gap in knowledge regarding the curriculum development methodology used for DM courses. This study aims to identify DM courses for medical students worldwide and to map their curriculum development methodo…

“ When Are We Going to Hold Orthorexia to the Same Standard as Anorexia and Bulimia? ” Exploring the Medicalization Process of Orthorexia Nervosa on Twitter
This study contributes to understanding medicalization on social media, by using Conrad’s concept of medicalization as a theoretical framework to explore the conversation about Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) on Twitter. The aim of this mixed-methods study was twofold: the quantitative component aimed to provide descriptive information on the type of tweets and users, as well as on the network structure of the ON-related conversation on Twitter, while th…
Developmental pathway of orthorexia nervosa
Orthorexia nervosa (ON) has in recent years attracted attention, but the scarcity of empirical research on the matter generates uncertainty about its progression. This study aims to gain insight into the developmental pathway of ON and factors contributing to it, to establish its etiology. In order to gain insights into health professionals' experience with patients that they identified as suffering from ON, this study adopted mixed methods, with…
Keep Yourself Alive”
This study aimed to understand the factors influencing people's choice to follow a diet considered healthy, and if and how these factors may contribute progress toward a higher (unhealthy) degree of preoccupation with healthy eating: orthorexia nervosa. This was achieved through mixed methods (interviews, n = 12; questionnaire, n = 82). The target group was young females in the Netherlands. Several biological, psychological, and social factors co…
And it snowballed from there”
This study aims to include the perspective of those who share content about Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) on Instagram and self-diagnose with ON (SD-ON) to trace their development of ON, gain insights into risk factors, symptoms and recovery, and explore differences with those who do not SD-ON. This research used mixed methods, with a sequential explanatory design. The quantitative component (n = 185) aimed to identify biological, psychological, interp…
