  • The Iraqi state's legitimacy deficit

    Open Access•Jacob Eriksson, Isaac Grief•ARTICLE•Global Policy•2023

This article analyses the nature of the legitimacy deficits of the post‐2003 Iraqi state and the grounds upon which alternative political orders have been proposed. The theoretical framework groups possible changes into three types: redistribution, regime change and secession. Empirically, the article illustrates these dynamics through two contemporary challenges to the Iraqi state: the Islamic State of Iraq and al‐Sham (ISIS), and the Tishreen p…

  • Coercion and third-party mediation of identity-based conflict

    Open Access•Jacob Eriksson•ARTICLE•Review of International Studies•2019•References: 22

This article analyses third-party mediation of identity-based conflicts, which are notoriously difficult to resolve. Here, the Swedish decision provides further evidence of the growing trend in the twenty-first century that recognition of new states is primarily determined by politics rather than law. Second, the …

    Open Access•Jacob Eriksson•ARTICLE•Middle East Policy•2018•Cited by: 1

Although the Trump administration claims to be seeking ‘the ultimate deal’ to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the effective attainment of this goal is subordinate to both domestic political concerns and wider Middle East foreign policy calculations. Using the shared antipathy between Israel and the Arab world towards Iran to reach an agreement is sound in principle but is being applied in such a way as to make sustainable Israeli-Palestinia…

  • Small-State Mediation in International Conflicts

    Jacob Eriksson•BOOK•Small-State Mediation in…•2015

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the most prolonged, contentious and divisive in the modern era. But, despite the volatile nature of the conflict, which frequently flares up in armed confrontations between the two, there have been advancements towards a settlement through an admittedly protracted peace process. In this book, Jacob Eriksson argues that the impact of small states, such as Sweden or Norway, should not be ignored when it co…
