  • A 7,000 years trajectory of socio-ecosystems in the montane belt of the northern French Alps

Open Access•Andréa Julien, Erwan Messager et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Environmental…•2025

Introduction This study, conducted on the Plateau des Glières, in the northern French Alps, investigates the evolution of vegetation composition over the past 7000 years. This site, within a montane ecosystem, offers a new opportunity to understand the human and landscape interactions under the influence of climate. To study these interactions as a whole and by integrating their complexity, we used two conceptual frameworks: the agroecosystem and…

  • Subsistence economy in the South Caucasus during the Early Chalcolithic period

Open Access•Alexia Decaix, Lucie Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Environmental…•2024

This paper examines the subsistence economy in the South Caucasus during the Early Chalcolithic (c.4700–4300 BC) through bioarchaeological analyses of the Bavra Ablari rock shelter site. This region, rich in biodiversity and characterized by a variety of climates and landscapes, has a history of agropastoral occupation dating back to the beginning of the 6 th millennium BC. Up to now, archaeological studies have mainly focused on the valleys and …

  • Lake Sedimentary DNA Research on Past Terrestrial and Aquatic Biodiversity

    Open Access•Eric Capo, Charline Giguet-Covex et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2021

The use of lake sedimentary DNA to track the long-term changes in both terrestrial and aquatic biota is a rapidly advancing field in paleoecological research. Although largely applied nowadays, knowledge gaps remain in this field and there is therefore still research to be conducted to ensure the reliability of the sedimentary DNA signal. Building on the most recent literature and seven original case studies, we synthesize the state-of-the-art an…

Aurélie Salavert, Émilie Gouriveau et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 5

This paper presents the results of archaeobotanical studies carried out on the Late Mesolithic layer at Melnychna-Krucha (6460–6100 cal BC) and the Linearbandkeramik (LBK) site of Kamyane-Zavallia (5295–4960 cal BC), close to the Southern Bug River. Despite the relatively modest dataset presented in this paper, these preliminary results provide new data for a region where the environmental setting and the uses of plant resources during the Early …

Open Access•Erwan Messager, Sébastien Nomade et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2017

The nature and timing of environmental changes throughout the last glacial-interglacial transition in the South Caucasus, and more widely in eastern Europe, are still not fully understood. According to certain pollen records, forest expansion occurred in many areas several millennia after what is considered worldwide as the onset of the Holocene. The current problem we face is that the time lag in forest expansion varies from one sequence to anot…

This paper contributes to understand the palaeoenvironment and the exploitation of vegetal resources during the Mid-Holocene in the southern Crimean Mountains. To address these questions, we apply a multi-proxy approach based on charcoal, seeds/fruits and phytoliths analyses from Neolithic layers (5800–5300 cal BC) of Buran-Kaya IV, a rock-shelter located in the south of Crimean Peninsula. Charcoal analysis shows that the Neolithic groups have ex…

Les fouilles du “ Carreau du Temple ”, effectuées en 2011, ont permis d’étudier une séquence pédo-sédimentaire préservée sous les vestiges d’une occupation qui débute au xiie s. avec le développement de l’Enclos du Temple. The aim of this study is to directly radiocarbon date pottery from prehistoric rock-art shelters in the Tassili n'Ajjer (central Sahara). We used a combined geochemical and microscopic approach to determine plant material in the pottery prior to direct 14 C dating. The ages obtained range from 5270 ± 35 BP (6276–5948 cal BP) to 8160 ± 45 BP (9190–9015 cal BP), and correlate with the chronology derived from pottery typology. Our results document t…
