Agent-Based Modeling as an Evaluation Tool to Understand the Mechanisms of a Financial Incentives Scheme for Maternal and Child Health in Tanzania
Agent-based models (ABMs) offer a robust mechanism for modeling dynamic health systems and their responses to reforms, capturing vital feedback loops between agents, and incorporating agent heterogeneities. We constructed an ABM to investigate the effects of a supply-side payment-for-performance (P4P) scheme for childbirth care in Tanzania, specifically focusing on its impact on demand-side behaviours.Three classes of agents were included in the m…
Crises and complexity
The end of the COVID-19 global health emergency presents an opportunity to reflect on actions needed to enhance the effectiveness of responses to any future shocks. We highlight critical areas requiring attention from researchers and research commissioners to enhance the identification and adoption of ‘good value’ interventions, and we discuss the complexities of evidence-informed decision-making across multiple sectors, the evolving role of mode…
The local burden of disease during the first wave of the Covid-19 epidemic in England
Limitations in testing capacity biased the observed trajectory of COVID-19 infections throughout the first wave. Basing inference on COVID-19-related mortality and higher-coverage testing later in the time period, we could explore the extent of this bias more explicitly. Evidence points towards substantial under-representation of initial growth and peak magnitude of infections nationally, to which different parts of the country contribute unequal…
Effectiveness of isolation, testing, contact tracing, and physical distancing on reducing transmission of Sars-CoV-2 in different settings
BACKGROUND: The isolation of symptomatic cases and tracing of contacts has been used as an early COVID-19 containment measure in many countries, with additional physical distancing measures also introduced as outbreaks have grown. To maintain control of infection while also reducing disruption to populations, there is a need to understand what combination of measures-including novel digital tracing approaches and less intensive physical distancin…
Catastrophic Health Impacts of Spiraling Climate Change
Recently, there has been a strong interest in the climate emergency and the human health impacts of climate change. Although estimates have been quoted, the modeling methods used have either been simplistic or opaque, making it difficult for policy makers to have confidence in these estimates. Providing central estimates of health impacts, without any quantification of their uncertainty, is deficient because such an approach does not acknowledge …
Relationship between exposure to the Avahan intervention and levels of reported condom use among men who have sex with men in southern India
Direct contact with Avahan program staff is associated with increased reported condom use among men who have sex with men in Bangalore. Reported consistent condom use and condom use at last sex act are associated with contacts involving demonstrations of correct condom use, and with receiving condoms, respectively
Modelling the impact and cost-effectiveness of the HIV intervention programme amongst commercial sex workers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India
This study demonstrated that targeted CSW interventions in India can be cost-effective, and highlights the importance of replicating this effort in other similar settings
