Faith actors and social norms shifting for adolescent health
Across low-and-middle income countries, adolescents navigate social environments where norms shape their opportunities and life trajectories. Faith actors are deeply embedded within these systems and often influence expectations related to communication, sexuality, reproductive health, and marriage. While faith engagement is widely recognized as important for sustainable change, empirical evidence on how faith actors contribute to social norm cha…
Norms shifting and behavior change in uncertain times
This commentary reflects on the current state of evidence on social norms interventions focused on improving health and economic outcomes for adolescent girls and young women in low- and middle-income countries. Drawing on a newly published global evidence review, it highlights how the field has evolved from narrow, individual-level strategies toward community-centered approaches. While conceptual clarity and implementation tools have improved, s…
Breastfeeding Is Not the Sole Responsibility of Women’
Breastfeeding is the optimal method of infant and young child feeding. In Nigeria, breastfeeding rates have struggled to markedly improve over past decades. Prior efforts to understand the determinants of breastfeeding have heavily focused on women themselves, with lesser attention on the complex interplay of cultural, economic and health system factors affecting breastfeeding. Given the struggle to sustain improvements in optimal feeding practic…
Men’s social networks, social norms, & family planning in Benin
To address low family planning (FP) use and high unmet need in West Africa, attention has been paid to addressing FP-related social networks and norms. Most work focuses on women. This analysis assesses men's FP-related social networks and norms and their relation to FP use in Benin using data from baseline surveys from the Tékponon Jikuagou intervention. We descriptively analysed men's egocentric FP-related social networks and norms at the villa…
Measurement of Social Norms Affecting Modern Contraceptive Use
As a critical building block to developing social norms interventions to support healthy family planning and other reproductive health behaviors, we conducted a literature review to identify and evaluate social norm measures related to modern contraceptive use. Of 174 articles reviewed in full, only 17 studies met our criteria for inclusion. Across these articles, no single measure of norms was used in more than one study; failure to specify the …
Sexual Relationship Power and Semen Exposure Among Female Patients at a Sexually Transmitted Infection Clinic in Kingston, Jamaica
Women's power in sexual relationships is thought to be an important predictor of condom use. However, research on correlates of condom use often relies on participant reporting of behavior, which has questionable validity. We evaluated the association between scores from the modified Sexual Relationship Power Scale (SRPS-M) and biological detection of semen exposure in a prospective study of adult women attending a sexually transmitted infection …
Exploring Discordance Between Biologic and Self-Reported Measures of Semen Exposure
Stimulant Use and Sexual Risk Behaviors for HIV in Rural North Carolina
Context: While literature exists on sexual risks for HIV among rural populations, the specific role of stimulants in increasing these risks has primarily been studied in the context of a single drug and/or racial group. Purpose: This study explores the use of multiple stimulants and sexual risk behaviors among individuals of different races and sexual identities in rural North Carolina. Methods: In‐depth interviews were conducted with 41 individu…

Husbands' and Wives' Reports of Contraceptive Use
Many Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) in the past decade have queried husbands and wives about their current contraceptive use. In this study, couples' concurrence on use and method used is compared by means of data from 23 countries, mostly in sub‐Saharan Africa. Husbands report higher levels of use than do their wives in every country studied, with ranges from 2 percent higher (Brazil) to 150 percent higher (Mali). Many of the discrepancies…
