Paul Bishop and the evolution of the Scottish Alliance of Geosciences, Environment and Society (Sages)
The Scottish Alliance of Geoscience, Environment and Society (SAGES) was launched in May 2007 and thrives to this day (https://www.sages.ac.uk). It is a major research partnership between ten institutions in Scotland squarely focused on the prime problem of our time, namely understanding how the natural world works and how it interacts with human society. The inspiration driving SAGES is that we can all contribute more if we collaborate. Paul Bis…

Insights into the Holocene environmental setting of Terra Nova Bay region (Ross Sea, Antarctica) from oxygen isotope geochemistry of Adélie penguin eggshells
An oxygen isotope record of Adélie penguin ( Pygoscelis adeliae) eggshells from Terra Nova Bay (Victoria Land, Antarctica) has been reconstructed in order to provide insights into the palaeoenviroment of this region during the last ~8000 years. The δ 18 O values measured in eggshell carbonate show a great variability over the course of the studied period, with maximum values consistently around +27.5‰. Adopting a metabolic enrichment relative to …
Late Holocene drought responsible for the collapse of Old World civilizations is recorded in an Italian cave flowstone
A severe drought in parts of low-latitude northeastern Africa and southwestern Asia\n\nca 4200 yr ago caused major disruption to ancient civilizations. Stable isotope, trace element,\n\nand organic fluorescence data from a calcite flowstone collected from the wellwatered\n\nAlpi Apuane karst of central-western Italy indicate that the climatic event responsible\n\nfor this drought was also recorded in mid-latitude Europe. Although the timing\n\nof…
Mollusca stable isotope record of a core from Lake Frassino, northern Italy
A core retrieved from Lake Frassino (northern Italy) provided evidence of palaeohydrological change in this area during the last 14 ka. Lithological, malacological and, in particular, stable isotope composition of freshwater shells allowed the delineation of the main phases of lake evolution between the Lateglacial and Holocene. Lateglacial conditions were drier than the Holocene, although a wetter period was inferred before c. 14 ka. According t…
