Modern vegetation and its pollen spectra in the Cantabrian mountains, northern Iberian Peninsula, compared with fossil pollen records
The study of the pollen rain from modern vegetation has greatly improved the interpretation of pollen diagrams and our understanding of ancient plant communities. Three sedimentary sequences from the southeastern littoral of the Iberian Peninsula have been palynologically studied. The results obtained show that during the Holocene no significant forest cover existed in the studied area, so that the different phases identified mainly show an alternation of shrub formations and steppe communities probably determined by limitations that are fundamentally bioclimatic. Four pollen diagrams from Minorca (Balearic Islands) have been correlated with other previously studied sequences from Majorca and Minorca to define a Holocene landscape sequence for the region from 8000 yr B.P. to the present. The Banyoles lacustrine sequence shows that the vegetational history of the northeastern Iberian Peninsula during the last 30,000 yr follows the North Atlantic pattern of climatic oscillations.
