  • Holocene Aridity-Induced Interruptions of Human Activity along a Fluvial Channel in Egypt’s Northern Delta

    Open Access•Jean‐Daniel Stanley, Jean-Daniel Stanley et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2021

Geoarchaeological information presented here pertains to a subsidiary Nile channel that once flowed west of the main Sebennitic distributary and discharged its water and sediments at Egypt’s then north-central deltaic coast. Periodical paleoclimatic episodes during the later Middle and Upper Holocene included decreased rainfall and increased aridity that reduced the Nile’s flow levels and thus likely disrupted nautical transport and anthropogenic…

  • Pompeii Damaged by Volcaniclastic Debris Flows Triggered Centuries Prior to the 79 A.D. Vesuvius Eruption

Open Access•Maria Rosaria Senatore, Annamaria Ciarallo et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2013•Cited by: 8•References: 2

This study records that P ompeii, long before its final devastation by the 79 A . D . V esuvius eruption in southern I taly, was damaged by several mass gravity flows. Composition of the deposits indicates that they were derived from volcaniclastic cover of carbonate highlands positioned 14 km NE of the city. Stratigraphic and petrologic analyses of sections in excavations and drill cores in and near P ompeii record the presence of three downslop…

  • Buried and Submerged G reek Archaeological Coastal Structures and Artifacts as Gauges to Measure Late H olocene Seafloor Subsidence off C alabria, I taly

    Open Access•Jean‐Daniel Stanley, Maria Pia Bernasconi•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This synthesis integrates recently acquired archaeological and geological data with earlier documented observations to shed light on the subsidence of ancient G reek coastal facilities in southern I taly. These are now positioned between former shorelines and inner shelf sectors at five C alabrian margin localities. Submergence of coastal to inner shelf facilities has resulted in part from sea‐level rise by about 2 m associated with glacio‐hydro‐…

  • Coastal margin evolution and postulated “basin‐shipyard” area at ancient Locri‐Epizephiri, Calabria, Italy

    Open Access•Maria Pia Bernasconi, Jean‐Daniel Stanley•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Environmental settings on the Ionian coastal plain and inner shelf seaward of Locri‐Epizephiri in Calabria, Italy, differed markedly before, during, and following settlement by the Greeks. Sediment core analyses and geophysical surveys in this study support recent archaeological findings and the hypothesis that the margin may once have served as a harbor and/or shipyard. The subsurface Holocene stratigraphy records that (1) the shoreline advanced…

  • Benthic biofacies to interpret Holocene environmental changes and human impact in Alexandria's Eastern Harbour, Egypt

    Open Access•Maria Pia Bernasconi, Romana Melis et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Holocene molluscan and foraminiferal faunas, sensitive ecological markers, are statistically treated to define their temporal and spatial distributions in radiocarbon-dated cores in Alexandria's Eastern Harbour. Up-core variations of these benthic biofacies record the evolution of depositional environments during the past 8000 years in this long-occupied Eastern Mediterranean port. The most important change occurred in the mid-Holocene between 63…

Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data, with ground‐based geologic investigations, define the geographic position of the relict Canopic channel in Egypt's NW Nile delta. Two sinuous channel segments south of Abu Qir Bay are observed on a radar image: a more sinuous trace (36 km in length) west of Idku lagoon, and an eastern one ( ̃20 km), reaching the lagoon's southeast corner. Sediment cores recovered along channel traces show sand‐rich de…

Strontium isotopic and petrologic information, obtained from sediment cores collected in the Nile delta of Egypt, indicate that paleoclimatic and Nile baseflow conditions changed considerably from about 4200 to 4000 cal yr B.P. in the Nile basin. Our study records a higher proportion of White Nile sediment transported during the annual floods at ca. 6100 cal yr B.P. than towards 4200 cal yr B.P., at which time suspended sediment from the Blue Nil…
