The impact of childhood maltreatment on paternal antenatal bonding
The findings suggest that emotional neglect and abuse during childhood may hinder expectant fathers' emotional bonding with their unborn child by making them more vulnerable to antenatal depression. Emotional neglect, in particular, emerged as a significant risk factor. These results emphasise the importance of screening expectant fathers for early adversity and depressive symptoms, in order to support paternal engagement and infant well-being
A scoping review of pain and tobacco use among cancer survivors
BACKGROUND: Pain and tobacco use frequently co-occur in the general population; however, less is known about whether these relationships extend to cancer survivors, who report high levels of chronic pain. PURPOSE: This scoping review aimed to inform future research by identifying, characterizing, and synthesizing the research literature on pain and nicotine/tobacco use among cancer survivors. METHODS: We developed and executed a comprehensive sea…
Medical Advocacy among Latina Women Diagnosed with Breast Cancer
Medical advocacy has continued to significantly impact quality of life and survivorship outcomes among Latina breast cancer survivors in the United States. However, little is known about the unique experiences of Latina survivors, including the perceived value, process, and context in which they practice medical advocacy. To help address this gap, we conducted a qualitative, secondary analysis of semi-structured focus groups with 18 Latina breast…
Measuring health-related quality of life in children with suspected genetic conditions
Motivating Weight Loss Among Black Adults in Relationships
BACKGROUND: Black men and women have the highest rates of obesity in the United States. Behavioral weight loss programs incorporating intimate partners may be effective in combating obesity among this population. Yet, current participation in these programs is low. Identifying motivations and triggers to weight loss may provide insight in designing programs to increase participation. AIM: To determine triggers and motivations for weight loss amon…
Mechanisms to enhance racial equity in health care
Background: As medical and public health professional organizations call on researchers and policy makers to address structural racism in health care, guidance on evidence-based interventions to enhance health care equity is needed. The most promising organizational change interventions to reduce racial health disparities use multilevel approaches and are tailored to specific settings. This study examines the Accountability for Cancer Care throug…

Examining Patient Perspectives on Weight Management Support in the Primary Care Setting
Advice to patients undergoing stem cell transplant
Hematopoietic stem cell transplant survivors often share advice with patients undergoing this difficult treatment. We content analyzed narratives written by 59 transplant survivors given the opportunity to share advice with patients. Analyses described categories of advice they shared and evaluated their perceptions of the helpfulness of advice they had received. We found nine advice categories and evidence for variation in their perceived helpfu…
Perceived partner support in pregnancy predicts lower maternal and infant distress.
Maternal postpartum emotional distress is quite common and can pose significant risk to mothers and infants. The current study investigated mothers' relationships with their partners during pregnancy and tested the hypotheses that perception of prenatal partner support is a significant predictor of changes in maternal emotional distress from midpregnancy to postpartum, and contributes to maternal ratings of infant distress to novelty. Using a pro…
Social correlates of distress following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
This study investigated whether loneliness and cognitive processing explain the influence of negative (social constraints) and positive (emotional support) relationship qualities on cancer survivors' distress. Participants were 195 cancer survivors who had undergone hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Path analysis supported the hypothesis that loneliness and cognitive processing would mediate the association between social constraints and d…
Long-Term Trajectories of Psychological Adaptation Among Women Diagnosed With Gynecological Cancers
OBJECTIVE: Women diagnosed with gynecological cancers may cope with a difficult treatment regimen that includes multiple abdominal surgeries and courses of chemotherapy and/or radiation. Little attention has been paid to identifying what factors place women at risk for long-term problems with psychological adaptation. The goal of the present study was to identify a set of demographic, medical, and predisposing factors as well as cognitive and soc…
Effective social support
This longitudinal study investigated a new conceptualization of the effectiveness of social support attempts called social support effectiveness (SSE) that takes into account the quantity and quality of support attempts and the extent to which they meet the needs of recipients. SSE was assessed in a sample of 176 pregnant women with regard to their partners’ social support behaviors. Potential antecedents of SSE were investigated, including indiv…
Maternal Prenatal Anxiety and Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone Associated With Timing of Delivery
OBJECTIVE: The high rate of preterm births is an imposing public health issue in the United States. Past research has suggested that prenatal stress, anxiety, and elevated levels of maternal plasma corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) are associated with preterm delivery in humans and animals. Studies to date have not examined all three variables together; that is the objective of this paper. METHODS: Data from 282 pregnant women were analyzed t…
Psychological adaptation and birth outcomes
Prenatal psychosocial predictors of infant birth weight and length of gestation were investigated in a prospective study of 120 Hispanic and 110 White pregnant women. Hypotheses specifying that personal resources (mastery, self-esteem, optimism), prenatal stress (state and pregnancy anxiety), and sociocultural factors (income, education, ethnicity) would have different effects on birth outcomes were tested using structural equation modeling. Resu…
Ethnicity and Social Support During Pregnancy
Data from two multi‐ethnic prospective studies of African American, Latina, and non‐Hispanic White pregnant women were used to examine the influence of contextual factors on social support processes during pregnancy. Multiple types of support (perceived support, received support, support satisfaction, network support) and sources of support (baby's father, family, friends) were assessed. The role of ethnicity in social support was examined after …
