  • Statistical Assessment of Geological and Geomorphological Factors on Building Damages Caused by the February 6, 2023 Earthquakes in the Amanos Region of Türkiye

Adem Kursat Ozcan, Candan Gökçeoğlu•ARTICLE•Natural Hazards Review•2025

The devastating earthquakes of February 6, 2023, in Türkiye’s Amanos region resulted in over 50,000 fatalities and damaged over 500,000 buildings. This study employs binary logistic regression analysis (area under the curve = 0.658) on data from 331,061 buildings in the region to understand the influence of geological and geomorphological features on building damage. The analysis revealed a quantitative relationship between altitude and damage. B…

  • Rockfall Hazard Assessment for Natural and Cultural Heritage Site

Open Access•Uğur Mursal, Abdullah Onur Ustaoglu et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025

This study presents a digital twin–based framework for assessing rockfall hazards at the immediate vicinity of the Rumkale Archaeological Site, a geologically sensitive and culturally significant location in southeastern Türkiye. Historically associated with early Christianity and strategically located along the Euphrates, Rumkale is a protected heritage site that attracts increasing numbers of visitors. Here, high-resolution photogrammetric mode…

  • A Novel Rock Mass Discontinuity Detection Approach with CNNs and Multi-View Image Augmentation

Open Access•I Yalcin, R Can et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2024

Discontinuity is a key element used by geoscientists and civil engineers to characterize rock masses. The traditional approach to detecting and measuring rock discontinuity relies on fieldwork, which poses dangers to human life. Photogrammetric pattern recognition and 3D measurement techniques offer new possibilities without direct contact with rock masses. This study proposes a new approach to detect discontinuities using close-range photogramme…

  • Modeling Shallow Landslide Runout Distance in Eocene Flysch Facies Using Empirical–Statistical Models (Western Black Sea Region of Türkiye)

Open Access•Muge Pinar Komu, Hakan Ahmet Nefeslioglu et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2024

Uncertainties related to runout distances in shallow landslide analyses may not only affect lives but may also result in economic losses. Owing to the increase in shallow landslides, which are especially triggered by heavy rainfall, runout distances have been investigated to decipher whether applications of a functional runout distance are feasible. This paper aims to give insights into the modeling of the shallow landslide runout probability in …

  • Performance Comparison of Landslide Susceptibility Maps Derived from Logistic Regression and Random Forest Models in the Bolaman Basin, Türkiye

Zehra Kaya Topaçli, Adem Kursat Ozcan et al.•ARTICLE•Natural Hazards Review•2024

Landslides often cause significant economic and human losses, and therefore landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) has become increasingly important. Accurate assessment of LSM is important for appropriate land use management and risk assessment. The aim of this study is to define and compare the results of applying the random forest (RF) and logistic regression (LR) models for estimating landslide susceptibility, and also to confirm the accuracy…

  • A CitSci Approach for Rapid Earthquake Intensity Mapping

Open Access•I Yalcin, Sultan Kocaman et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2020

Nowadays several scientific disciplines utilize Citizen Science (CitSci) as a research approach. Natural hazard research and disaster management also benefit from CitSci since people can provide geodata and the relevant attributes using their mobile devices easily and rapidly during or after an event. An earthquake, depending on its intensity, is among the highly destructive natural hazards. Coordination efforts after a severe earthquake event ar…

  • Use of Mamdani Fuzzy Algorithm for Multi-Hazard Susceptibility Assessment in a Developing Urban Settlement (Mamak, Ankara, Turkey)

Open Access•Tuğçe YANAR, Sultan Kocaman et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2020

Urban areas may be affected by multiple hazards, and integrated hazard susceptibility maps are needed for suitable site selection and planning. Furthermore, geological–geotechnical parameters, construction costs, and the spatial distribution of existing infrastructure should be taken into account for this purpose. Up-to-date land-use and land-cover (LULC) maps, as well as natural hazard susceptibility maps, can be frequently obtained from high-re…

  • A multistory gigantic subaerial debris flow in an active fault scarp in NW Anatolia, Turkey

    Open Access•Faruk Ocakoğlu, S Acikalin et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Mass instability in the uplifting footwall blocks of normal faults involves a range of regional and local factors including, among others, climatic setting, topography, lithology and particularly ground shaking during earthquakes. Morphological and sedimentological investigations backed by 14 C dating on a huge debris flow and its zone of depreciation provided favorable insights for dynamics and causative factors of this mass wasting. Our observa…
