The Effect of mHealth Interventions on Early Childhood Development
Objective: Early childhood development shapes lifelong health and learning, with 90% of brain architecture formed by age 5. Mobile health shows promise in this area. We conducted a systematic review to assess mobile health use in early childhood development. Methods: The review followed PRISMA guidelines, with a comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for English‐language articles from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2024. To …
The Little Engine That Could’
Little is known about provision of medical services to adolescents prior to participating in international top-level sports. This study aimed to investigate experiences of medical service provision among high-level adolescent athletics (track and field) athletes from three continents. A thematic narrative analysis was applied to data collected from 14 athletes by semi-structured interviews. Although competing at the highest international level, t…
Determinants of Sports Injury in Young Female Swedish Competitive Figure Skaters
Introduction: Although figure skating attracts several hundred thousand participants worldwide, there is little knowledge about physical health and sports injuries among young skaters. The present study aimed to describe the health status of a geographically defined Swedish population of licensed competitive figure skaters and to examine injury determinants. Methods: All licensed competitive skaters in the southeastern region of Sweden were in Ap…

Examining quality function deployment in safety promotion in Sweden
The first-hand needs and demands of laypersons are not always considered when safety promotion programmes are being developed. We compared focal areas for interventions identified from residents' statements of safety needs with focal areas for interventions identified by local government professionals in a Swedish urban community certified by the international Safe Community movement supported by the World Health Organization. Quantitative and qu…
Patients with irritable bowel syndrome are more burdened by co-morbidity and worry about serious diseases than healthy controls- eight years follow-up of IBS patients in primary care
In this population based case-control study, the analysis of diagnoses from the HCR revealed a broad spectrum of common co-morbidity and significantly more physician-recorded diagnoses among IBS-patients in comparisons to the control group
Empowering Single Mothers in Iran
Since 2000, a problem-solving model has been taught to the Society for Protecting the Rights of the Child, and teachers and students of social work in two universities in Iran. Since 2006, with the initiation of UNICEF, social workers, psychologists and even some psychiatrists in Iran have been learning this model. In 2008, a group of researchers created an empowerment-oriented psycho-social group and private intervention project to assess whethe…
The hopes of West African refugees during resettlement in northern Sweden
Hopes regarding education and family reunion were central in the resettlement of West African refugees in Sweden. These thoughts were not systematically followed up by the support organization; possibly the resources for refugees were not fully released. More studies are needed to further investigate the motivational factors underpinning host community support of refugees' hopes and plans
Quality indicators for implementation of safety promotion
The theoretical underpinnings of safety promotion have not yet been integrated with implementation practice to ascertain between-community programme quality. This study sets out to develop a framework for verifying of the quality of community-based safety-promotion programmes in the global context. We analysed the certification indicators deployed in the international Safe Community movement in light of systems theory. Data were collected from fo…
Does the perceived neighborhood reputation contribute to neighborhood differences in social trust and residential wellbeing
The authors used a mixed methods approach to examine if the reputation of a housing area has bearing on residential wellbeing and social trust in three pairs of socioeconomically contrasting neighborhoods in a Swedish urban municipality. Multilevel logistic regression analyses were performed to examine associations between area reputation and residential wellbeing and social trust, controlling for the random effect of neighborhood and individual …
Correlates of local safety-related concerns in a Swedish Community
We have identified environmental, socio-demographic, and personal correlates of safety-related concerns in contiguous neighbourhoods in a Swedish community. The results of this study suggest that residents' self-assessed area reputation is an important underlying mechanism of perceived safety. We also found a difference in crime rates and safety-related concerns between areas with blocks of flats compared with small-scale areas although the neigh…
Adult–Adolescent Interaction and Adolescents’ Brain Development
The aim of this paper is to outline a platform for research on adolescents’ life regulation. Adolescents’ brain development is described with the help of neuroscience and integrated with pragmatist and symbolic interactionist insights about how adolescents can learn to control their impulses and act thoughtfully. The foundation for the analysis is found in American pragmatism, where a biopsychosocial perspective is built on the understanding that…
Exploration of the life histories and future of war‐wounded Salvadoran and Iranian Kurd quota refugees in Sweden
This study explores the life histories of ten Salvadoran and twelve Iranian Kurd refugees. Both groups came to Sweden as war‐wounded quota refugees and their migration was forced. They had spent many years in guerilla movements and were experienced soldiers despite their youth. They were interviewed during hospitalisation shortly after arrival in Sweden, and followed‐up after two years. The findings suggest that repatriation is a recurrent theme …
Survival with pain
The aim of this study was to investigate the nature of chronic pain in male war-wounded refugees and to examine the relationship between chronic pain and psychiatric symptoms. A culturally heterogeneous group of 44 war-wounded refugees were investigated during hospitalization, shortly after arrival, and followed up after two years. This study is an additional follow-up after eight years. The data collection methods used were structured interviews…
A female lay perspective on the establishment of long‐term sickness absence
In Sweden women account for about 60% of the long‐term cases of sickness absence. The aim of this study was to describe women's explanations as to how long‐term sickness absence arises and becomes permanent, with reference to their personal experience. Semi‐structured interviews were performed with 82 middle‐aged women who have personal experience of long‐term sickness absence. Long‐term sickness absence can be said to arise in three distinguisha…
How Do You Feel
This study describes the construction and evaluation of an instrument for measuring psychological well-being in refugees. A 16-item scale, 'How do you feel?', for concurrent measurement of present and previous well-being was constructed and translated into five languages. Male war-wounded refugees were tested during hospitalization shortly after arrival ( n= 60) and after two years ( n= 53). The group was culturally heterogenous. The reliability …
The Voices of Design
There is a lack of knowledge about how participation in information system design is built in practice and, particularly, about the interaction taking place within multi-disciplinary design groups. One way to structure participatory design processes has been by the introduction of rules for a "democratic dialogue." The purpose of this study was to explore the dynamics of small-group design meetings in which a set of rules aimed at leveling the po…
Following the thread of ariadne to the health of women
The health of women has risen to a priority position in medical research. Comparative studies of female morbidity are called for as an intermediary stage for generation of hypotheses and design of deeper studies of determinants, such as social, ecological, and individual factors. In previous studies, we have noted differences in female hospitalization between Heraklion in Greece and Linköping in Sweden. They were related to age and to urban versu…
