Agropastoral practices and woodland management shaped the Irano-Turanian steppe-forest vegetation during the Transitional PPNA/B–Early PPNB (8895–8210 cal bce) at Kharaysin, Jordan
The present study reconstructs vegetation change and human–environment interactions from the Transitional Pre-Pottery Neolithic A/B (8895–8415 cal bce) to the Early Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (8465–8210 cal bce) at the Kharaysin archaeological site (Zarqa, Jordan). For the first time at this site, integrated pollen, wood charcoal and phytolith analyses have been carried out in combination with a detailed archaeostratigraphic and Bayesian-modelled ch…
Pulse of the Past
Ground stone tools are considered prime evidence for exploring significant aspects of prehistoric societies, particularly concerning plant food processing. For this reason, studying their use can reveal relevant clues concerning the modes of exploitation of specific plants and highlight local and shared culinary practices. This paper presents the first functional study of the ground stone tools from the Pre Pottery Neolithic site of Kharaysin in …
Lithics from the lower gallery at La Garma (Zone IV)
Lithic industry provides key information for understanding the Magdalenian occupation in Zon IV. • A technological analysis of the retouched and unretouched artefacts is carried out. • The study of the raw materials suggests a long-distance circulation. • Technological and raw material analysis reinforces the interpretation of symbolic activities in Zone IV The lithic assemblage recovered from Zone IV in the Lower Gallery at La Garma (Cantabria, …
Architecture in Kharaysin from the late PPNA to the middle PPNB
The study of the architectural remains discovered at the Early Neolithic site of Kharaysin (Zarqa, Jordan) casts light on the evolution of building techniques in the Jordan Highlands from the late 10th millennium, at the end of the PPNA, to the mid-8th millennium cal BC, during the Middle PPNB. Five main architectural levels are identified. Oval sunken dwellings were built at the end of 10th and the beginning of the 9th millennia cal BC. In ca. 8…
Bayesian estimates of the marine radiocarbon reservoir effect during the Magdalenian in northern Iberia
Quantifying marine reservoir effects (MREs) across time and space is crucial for establishing accurate archaeological chronologies, including the activities of past hominines. Although the northern Iberian Peninsula shows a high density of Upper Paleolithic sites and marine shells are frequently found in these assemblages, quantification of MREs in this coastal region remains limited. We performed Bayesian modeling of radiocarbon measurements fro…
Bioavailable 87 Sr/ 86 Sr variability and Bronze and Iron Ages caprine mobility on the Balearic Islands (Spain)
This paper presents the most extensive 87Sr/86Sr datasets from Late Prehistory contexts in addition to bioavailable 87Sr/86Sr values for baseline characterization on the Balearic Islands. A total of 149 caprine dental enamel samples from Mallorca, Menorca, and Formentera islands (Spain), and 35 environmental baseline samples covering the main geologies of these islands are presented here. In addition, a combination of strontium and oxygen sequent…
The Early Pre-Pottery Neolithic B in The Southern Levant
During the last twenty years, several archaeological sites with occupation levels attributed to the Early Pre-Pottery Neolithic B have been excavated in the southern Levant, filling the previous information gap. Our excavations at Tell Qarassa North (Sweida, Syria) and Kharaysin (Zarqa, Jordan), with EPPNB occupations dated from ca. 8600 to 8200 cal. BC, have contributed to the renewal of our knowledge of the PPNB in the southern area of the Fert…
Geometric and radiometric recording of prehistoric graphic expression
In the studies on Prehistoric Graphic Expression, there are recurrent discussions about the tracings generated by different observers of the same motif. Methodological issues concerning the role of archaeological imaging are often implied within those debates. Do the tracings belong to the observational data exposition chapter, or are they part of the interpretative conclusions? How can the current technological scenario help solve these problems…
The stone connection
Formentera was one of the last Mediterranean islands to be colonized by humans at the end of the third millennium BC. This island is rather small (83¿km2) with marked biogeographical constraints. Typical of a semi-arid environment, the island is poor in resources and biodiversity. Macrolithic tools from the prehistoric sites of Ca na Costa (ca. 2130¿1790 cal BC), Cap de Barbaria II (ca. 1740¿900 cal BC), and Sa Cala (ca. 800¿570 cal BC) showed si…
Hunting at the Fringe of the Desert
[EN] Nahal Efe is the largest and best preserved Middle PPNB site in the Negev (Israel), constituting a privileged data source for reconstructing the animal exploitation and subsistence strategies of the hunter-gatherer communities that inhabited the Negev 10,000 years ago. The preliminary results of the study of the faunal assemblage from excavation seasons 2015–2019 are presented in this paper. The zooarchaeological study indicates that during …

Flint 'figurines' from the Early Neolithic site of Kharaysin, Jordan
During the Early Neolithic in the Near East, particularly from the mid ninth millennium cal BC onwards, human iconography became more widespread. Explanations for this development, however, remain elusive. This article presents a unique assemblage of flint artefacts from the Middle Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (eighth millennium BC) site of Kharaysin in Jordan. Contextual, morphological, statistical and use-wear analyses of these artefacts suggest tha…
New data for the late Upper Palaeolithic in the Cantabrian region
From the Natufian to the Chalcolithic in Southern Syria
EN] The Qarassa North Tell excavations, conducted between 2007 and 2010 by a French-Syrian-Spanish team, were the final phase of a program of research that began in 2002 with the Leja archaeological surveys. Following the surveys, excavations started on the southern tell of Qarassa in 2007, with the aim of assessing the Bronze and Iron Age sequence identified among modern houses scattered on the southern tell during previous surveys. In 2008, sur…
The Natufian Occupations of Qarassa 3 (Sweida, Southern Syria)
Revealing early villages – Pseudo‐3D ERT geophysical survey at the pre‐pottery Neolithic site of Kharaysin, Jordan
Electric resistivity tomography (ERT) prospection conducted at the Pre‐Pottery Neolithic site at Kharaysin, Jordan, building on previous surface prospection and excavation, found a number of new sub‐surface anomalies. Subsequent excavations determined that the anomalies corresponded with the stone walls of habitation structures and possibly terrace walls. These features covered large areas of the site slope, inclusive of clustered settlement stru…

Regional diversity on the timing for the initial appearance of cereal cultivation and domestication in southwest Asia
Significance Recent studies show that cultivation of wild and domesticated plants was a protracted process that developed across southwest Asia. However, there have not been sufficient data to evaluate whether cereal cultivation and domestication developed in parallel in all the regions or at different times. Our findings indicate that cultivation of wild cereal forms during Pre-Pottery Neolithic A was common only in specific regions such as the …

Research projects undertaken in the Cantabrian region since 1980 have produced new, high-quality information about the neolithisation process(es) in this area. It is now necessary to review this archaeological information and test the main hypotheses put forward to explain it. This paper presents an update on the archaeological evidence (sites, chronological dates, archaeozoological, archaeobotanical and technological information) for the early N…
Developing a complex network model of obsidian exchange in the Neolithic Near East
