  • Exploring stakeholder support for student-run free clinics to address gaps in non-communicable disease care in Ghana

Open Access•Brian Fleischer, Esi Berkoh et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including hypertension and diabetes, are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Ghana, where underserved communities face persistent barriers to screening, early management, and self-care education. Student-run free clinics (SRFCs) may help address these gaps, but their feasibility in sub-Saharan Africa remains underexplored. We used an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design to examine stakeholder pers…

  • Overweight/obesity among 15- to 24-year-old women in Ghana

    Open Access•Derek Anamaale Tuoyire•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2021

Although developing countries are experiencing some of the fastest rises in the prevalence of adult overweight and obesity, little is known about the pace of the problem among young people in transition from adolescence to adulthood. This study examined the trend and associated socio-demographic predictors of overweight/obesity (BMI ≥25kg/m 2 ) from 1993 to 2014 among women aged 15–24 years in Ghana and projected the future prevalence from 2019 t…

Open Access•Derek Anamaale Tuoyire, Harold Ayetey•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2019

Hypertension is a significant contributor to the global burden of cardiovascular and related target organ diseases such as heart failure, coronary heart disease, stroke and kidney failure, and their associated premature morbidity, mortality and disability. Marital status is an important social characteristic known to predict a range of health outcomes including cardiovascular disease. However, little is known about its impact on hypertension in s…

    Open Access•Joshua Amo-Adjei, Derek Anamaale Tuoyire•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2018

This study aimed to contribute to the evidence on the timing of sexual debut in young people in sub-Saharan African countries. Data were extracted from 34 nationally representative surveys conducted in the region between 2006 and 2014. The study sample comprised unmarried women ( n =167,932) and men ( n =76,900) aged 15–24 years. Descriptive techniques and Cox proportional regression models were used to estimate the timing of sexual debut, and Ka…

  • Prevalence of helicobacter pylori infection among children living in a rural setting in Sub-Saharan Africa

Open Access•Yaw Asante Awuku, David Larbi Simpong et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

Our study demonstrated a high prevalence of H. pylori infection among children in a rural setting. Educational status of parents did not affect H. pylori prevalence but increasing household numbers, female gender, source of drinking water other than pipe and borehole, open-air defecation and younger age were associated with a higher H. pylori prevalence

  • Determinants of Unprotected Casual Heterosexual Sex in Ghana

Open Access•Akwasi Kumi-Kyereme, Derek Anamaale Tuoyire et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2014

Casual heterosexual sex remains a significant contributor to HIV transmissions in Ghana. The study used data from the 2008 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS) to assess the socio-demographic, economic and spatial factors influencing unprotected casual heterosexual sex among men and women. The results of the binary logistic regression models revealed that women aged 35–44 had significantly higher odds of engaging in unprotected casual heter…
