  • Mother of All Labour

    Open Access•Veronica Gomez-Temesio•ARTICLE•Medicine Anthropology Theory•2024

Wonkifong Ebola treatment unit was unique at the time of the outbreak that hit the Guinea in 2014. Contrary to other infrastructures run by Western workers, Wonkifong mainly employed personnel from Guinea, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Cuba. Even so, the unit constituted a racialised landscape where proximity to white agencies granted privileges to certain groups of racialised people while excluding others. In a humanitarian infrastructur…

  • Homage to Ebola Fighters

    Open Access•Veronica Gomez-Temesio•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology Quarterly•2022•References: 24

During the Ebola outbreak that hit Guinea in 2014, most of the people employed at the Wonkifong Ebola treatment unit were from Africa or Cuba. Despite the recruitment of black personnel, the unit exposes how the humanitarian infrastructure exploited Guinean workers as if their lives were less vulnerable than those of the foreign personnel. The Africanization of aid reveals a post-colonial segregation at the intersection of race, class, and locali…

    Open Access•Veronica Gomez-Temesio•BOOK•L’État sourcier•2019

When I started exploring water access in Senegal, the goal of my research was to test the legal-rational Weberian paradigm through an ethnography of the everyday experience of the State. In the central region of the country, a team of servants attached to the Water Supervisory Ministry were charged with the maintenance of water access. Citizens mostly depicted these agents as "caimans": Greedy predators who were always asking for money. Witnessin…

  • Outliving Death

    Open Access•Veronica Gomez-Temesio, Veronica Gomez‐temesio•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2018•Cited by: 18•References: 38

Treatment units were created all across the country with a mission to save lives when the Ebola outbreak hit Guinea in 2014. These units were exceptional sites of biomedical and biosecurity technology. Nevertheless, the concrete procedures to contain the virus reduced the people quarantined to dangerous bodies. The emergency therefore created zombies, haunting figures trapped between life and death. The figure of the zombie shed light on the fail…

  • La mise en camp de la Guinée

    Open Access•Veronica Gomez-Temesio, F Le Marcis•ARTICLE•L Homme•2017•Cited by: 11•References: 44

In 2014, West Africa was hit by the first large-scale outbreak of the Ebola virus epidemic. The event was widely recognized as exceptional, not only for how rapidly it spread, how long it lasted, and the scale of the humanitarian response but also, from the point of view of people in Guinea, for the attempt to resist, sometimes violently, the means used to respond to it. Our comparative ethnographic study of two Ebola Treatment Centres (Etc) set …

  • Home is Claiming for Rights

    Veronica Gomez-Temesio•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 20

In Senegal, when a borehole breakdown occurs in a community, the “son of the soil” is summoned to help as an informal key alternative to officials appointed by user committees. “Sons” have several points in common: Born in the village, they work as administrative executives in the capital Dakar and are connected to the ruling party. Sons of the soil narratives shed light on a specific “moral economy” in which people born on the same soil, home, h…

    Veronica Gomez-Temesio•ARTICLE•Journal des anthropologues•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 18
