Geological Approach to Lithic Landscape During the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene in the Southern Puna of the Atacama Desert (25°–27° S, 3200–5000 m a.s.l.)
The petrographic study of raw materials is essential to understanding their provenance, availability, and role in human mobility. Linking the lithic landscape to its geological context reveals technological patterns. In the Atacama highlands (25°–27° S), part of the southern Andean Puna, lithic resources are abundant due to formations such as the Cordillera de Domeyko and the Andes. This study shows that tools from Late Pleistocene and Early Holo…
Human dynamics in the Southern Puna of Chile (25°-27°s) during the Late Holocene
We discuss the process of human re-occupation of the Southern Puna (25°-27°S) during the Late Holocene through a variety of lines of evidence, such as ceramics, faunal bones, lithic technology, sources of raw materials like obsidian, and rock art, and their integration with spatial analyses using least-cost paths. Our results indicate a process in which niches were formed in the puna, focused on a variety of activities such as vicuña hunting; exp…
Technological and Protein Residue Analysis on Ancient Stemmed Projectile Points of the Southern Andes Highlands
We present the results of technological and protein residue analyses of the lithic assemblages recovered at the Pedernales-38 site (26.5°S; 69°W), located in the highlands of the southern Andes (3380 masl). Based on a reconstruction of the operational chains and the differential representation of their phases, we suggest that the final production, use, maintenance, and discard of large stemmed projectile points occurred at the site. Of the assemb…
Pedernales-5
We present the results of an interdisciplinary study conducted at the Pedernales-5 site, situated in the Salar de Pedernales basin (26°S; 3356 masl), dated from 10,510−10,749 to 11,201−11,612 cal. BP. Unlike other Late Pleistocene and Holocene sites in the Andean Puna, where vicuñas ( Vicugna vicugna) were the primary prey, at Pedernales-5, the zooarcheological assemblage consists almost exclusively of flamingo (Phoenicopteridae) and bird remains…
Life in the Atacama Desert 10.000 years ago, as told by a tiny black obsidian tool
A fresh obsidian edge can be extremely sharp, as little as one molecule thick. Andean societies were quite familiar with the high quality of this volcanic glass, using it not only in weapons for warfare and hunting but also in surgical and trepanning instruments. Furthermore, its beauty and unusual brightness encouraged the manufacture of ornaments and prestige goods – often exchanged through caravan traffic. Among the archaeological remains of t…
Chronological sequence (early and late Holocene) and cultural trajectories in Quebrada Pedernales, southern Puna, Chile (26°S-3,456-3,730 masl)
Provenance and long-term circulation of archaeological obsidian in the Puna de Copiapó (25-27°S), South-Central Andes
Huentelauquén coastal groups in the Andean highlands? An assessment of human occupations of the Early Holocene in Salar de Pedernales , Chile (26°S, 3356 masl)
We present new evidence obtained in archaeological surveys in Quebrada Pedernales (3356 masl), in the southern puna of Chile (26°S; 69°W). A series of surface findings such as large lanceolate stemmed projectile points and geometric stones, together with chronostratigraphic and artifactual data recovered in excavations at the Pedernales-38 site, suggest that the coastal Huentelauquén groups explored and inhabited the Andean highlands between 10,1…
Hunting and feasting in the pre-Columbian Andes
Expanding the Edge
Several archaeological sites located in caves and rockshelters in the highlands of the Central Atacama Desert reflect the late-Pleistocene peopling of the area (13,000–11,500 cal yr BP). Based on study of the lithic technology and other complementary data, we suggest that they were used as hunting stations and transient camps, mostly intended for specialized tasks as part of long-distance mobility. The gradual extension of the logistical radii of…
What’s it like out there? Landscape learning during the early peopling of the highlands of the south-central Atacama desert
Moving into an arid landscape
The Use of Hunting and Herding Spaces
We present the results of analysing stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes in camelid remains found at the Late Archaic site TU-52 (ca. 5000-3800 bp), the Tarajne Phase site TU-94 and the Early Formative sites TU-54, TU-85 and TU-122 (ca. 3100-2400 bp). All of the sites are located in the Puna de Atacama (Northern Chile) along the 14 km Tulan transect, between the head of Tulan ravine (ca. 3000 m.a.s.l.) and the border of the Salar de Atacama (2317 …
