Intersectional patterns of HIV-related stigma and discrimination during early Covid-19 pandemic restrictions
This cross-sectional study examined intersectional HIV-related stigma during early UK COVID-19 restrictions. Multiple logistic regressions and marginal effects examined demographic correlates of enacted stigma, internalised stigma, disclosure and data security concerns. Among 653 respondents, 80.6% identified as male, 69.8% as gay, and 16.9% as ethnic minority. Since the pandemic, 6.8% reported increased enacted stigma, 32.6% internalised stigma,…
Strength and Vulnerability
Unmitigated communion (UC), the prioritisation of others' needs over one's own well-being, is a critical lens for understanding the mental health of female migrants. This qualitative study explores how UC intersects with constructions of strength and vulnerability within this population, particularly amid challenges such as adaptation, discrimination, and gendered roles. Using a feminist participatory methodology, the study was co-produced with 1…
Barriers to healthcare access and experiences of stigma
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Long Covid is often stigmatised, particularly in people who are disadvantaged within society. This may prevent them from seeking help and could lead to widening health inequalities. This coproduced study with a Community Advisory Board (CAB) of people with Long Covid aimed to understand healthcare and wider barriers and stigma experienced by people with probable Long Covid. METHODS: An active case finding approach was employed…
“HIV has taught us that you can survive anything”
This study aimed to elucidate the intrinsic and extrinsic resilience resources among people living with HIV (PLWH) during the Covid pandemic. Autoethnographic video diaries from 29 PLWH from Argentina, UK, Philippines, Zimbabwe, and Trinidad and Tobago were included. Data were thematically analysed and validated with community partners and a video was co-produced. PLWH displayed a readiness to adopt healthy behaviours and engage in optimistic and…
Resilience resources for mental health among people living with HIV
Remember there is that thing called confidentiality’
Adolescents and men are two populations that perform poorly within the HIV cascade of care, having worse AIDS-related health outcomes, and experiencing higher levels of HIV-related stigma. This paper explores institutional health system discrimination as experienced by adolescent boys with perinatally-acquired HIV, situating them within the social and gendered contexts of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Life history narratives (n = 36) a…
“I have the strength to get through this using my past experiences with HIV”
408, 63.0%). Widespread resilience was also noted: 537 (83.3%) of respondents felt that living with HIV had equipped them with the strength to adapt to the Covid-19 pandemic. Findings highlight important gaps between the multifaceted needs of PLWH. Multisectoral collaborations and investments are needed to adequately support PLWH and to build resilience to future shocks within HIV services
Power to participants
Whilst the HIV response has made significant progress in increasing representation of adults affected by HIV, the meaningful inclusion of children and adolescents has lagged. But this may be a pivotal moment of change. We report on a decade of conducting adolescent advisory groups in South Africa, to reflect on youth advisory processes. Data was collected from 2008 to 2018 from adolescent advisors (n = 60) and researchers (n = 25), and included f…
Access to community-based HIV services among transgender women in Cambodia
Despite the extensive expansion of community-based HIV programs, less than half of transgender women in this national survey had access to the services. Innovative strategies and culturally sensitive interventions should be put in place to reach and respond to the needs of sub-groups of transgender women who are less likely to be reached by the existing traditional approaches
They Say HIV is a Punishment from God or from Ancestors’
Sub-Saharan Africa is home to 90 % of the world's adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV). HIV-stigma and the resultant fear of being identified as HIV-positive can compromise the survival of these youth by undermining anti-retroviral treatment initiation and adherence. To date, no HIV-stigma measures have been validated for use with ALHIV in Sub-Saharan Africa. This paper reports on a two-stage study in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Firstly, we co…
Medical Pluralism Predicts Non-ART Use among Parents in Need of ART
Child-focused state cash transfers and adolescent risk of HIV infection in South Africa
BACKGROUND: Effective and scalable HIV prevention for adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa is needed. Cash transfers can reduce HIV incidence through reducing risk behaviours. However, questions remain about their effectiveness within national poverty-alleviation programmes, and their effects on different behaviours in boys and girls. METHODS: In this case-control study, we interviewed South African adolescents (aged 10-18 years) between 2009 and 20…
