Aedes -borne diseases, such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya, pose a significant threat to millions of people worldwide each year. Considering the relationships between the emergence of these diseases and anthropogenic climate change, it has become imperative for health authorities to maintain detailed surveillance of key environmental variables that can trigger epidemic episodes. While disease transmission is generally conditioned by multiple so…
Combining precipitation forecasts and vegetation health to predict fire risk at subseasonal timescale in the Amazon
Current forecast systems provide reliable deterministic forecasts at the scale of weather (1–7 days) and probabilistic outcomes at the scale of seasons (1–9 months). Only in recent years research has begun transitioning to operational settings to provide numerical predictions for a lead time of 2–4 weeks, a timescale known as subseasonal. The Subseasonal Experiment (SubX) multi-model ensemble mean precipitation forecast (2017–2021) for days 8–14 …
On the potential impact of a half-degree warming on cold and warm temperature extremes in mid-latitude North America
This study focuses on potential impacts of climate change on the early spring (March–April) temperature and its extremes in the mid-latitudes of North America, discriminated between the 1.5 °C and 2 °C levels of global warming, as projected by a suit of numerical experiments. The results suggest relatively mild seasonal average warming (0.25 °C–1.5 °C), but also an intensification of both warm and cold temperature extremes. The derived changes fe…
The Social and Spatial Ecology of Dengue Presence and Burden during an Outbreak in Guayaquil, Ecuador, 2012
Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne arbovirus, is a major public health concern in Ecuador. In this study, we aimed to describe the spatial distribution of dengue risk and identify local social-ecological factors associated with an outbreak of dengue fever in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador. We examined georeferenced dengue cases ( n = 4248) and block-level census data variables to identify social-ecological risk factors associated with the presence/ab…
Investigating El Niño‐Southern Oscillation and society relationships
Throughout at least the past several centuries, El Niño‐Southern Oscillation ( ENSO ) has played a significant role in human response to climate. Over time, increased attention on ENSO has led to a better understanding of both the physical mechanisms, and the environmental and societal consequences of the phenomenon. The prospects for seasonal climate forecasting emerged from ENSO studies, and were first pursued in ENSO studies. In this paper, we…
