  • On Some Proposed Kartvelian–Anatolian Loanwords

    Zsolt Simon•ARTICLE•Iran and the Caucasus•2026

Several loanwords have been proposed between the Anatolian branch of the Indo-European language family and the Kartvelian languages. This paper presents a critical evaluation of these proposals from the point of view of our contemporary knowledge about the Anatolian languages. It is argued that most of the cases face linguistic and/or methodological problems; nevertheless, one case can indeed be substantiated. The paper also addresses the chronol…

  • On the Carian Inscription from Mengefe

    Open Access•Zsolt Simon•ARTICLE•Gephyra•2025

This article provides a new analysis of the recently published Carian inscription from Mengefe. It critically discusses the interpretation of the edition, demonstrates that it is mistaken at crucial points (in identifying the words for ‘grandfather’, ‘grandson’, and ‘and’ as well as a relative clause), and offers a more fitting translation (including an [appurtenance] adjective and a clitic correlative conjunction or disjunction), addressing negl…

  • Once Again on the Distribution of Cuneiform Luwian =ša/za

    Zsolt Simon•ARTICLE•Journal of Cuneiform Studies•2024•References: 1

This article argues that the Cuneiform Luwian nominal particle =ša/za was not assigned on a word-by-word basis in the -r-, -r/n-, -l-stem classes but followed a regular pattern, thus Jasanoff’s rule of the distribution of this particle can be extended and confirmed

  • Carian ś(j)as and σοῦα(ν)

    Open Access•Zsolt Simon•ARTICLE•Gephyra•2023

The similarity of two terms of Carian funerary terminology, ś(j)as ‘funerary monument’ (attested in Carian inscriptions) and σοῦα(ν) ‘tomb’ (preserved by Stephan of Byzantium) was recognized long ago, but their connection, if it exists at all, is unclear. This paper argues that both forms go back to the same underlying word by regular phonological and morphological processes

  • Lat. ploxenum and plaustrum reconsidered

    Open Access•Zsolt Simon•ARTICLE•Indogermanische Forschungen•2023

This paper argues that the traditional Celtic etymology of Latin ploxenum 'a carriage-body' cannot be upheld since there is no evidence for a Celtic origin.Instead, it can both formally and semantically regularly be derived from the PIE root *pleu k-'schweben'.This derivation finds support in the rarely assumed connection with Latin plaustrum 'a wagon or cart' that can, again, be regularly derived from the same root, while its traditional derivat…

  • Once again on the original name of Emperor Zeno of Isauria

    Zsolt Simon•ARTICLE•Byzantinische Zeitschrift•2023

This paper argues that Harrison’s analysis of Tarasikodissa as a combination of Zeno’s original personal name and his patronym is the correct one, but it is to be modified as Tarasis, son of Kodios. The paper also provides a new piece of \nevidence that Isaurian was still a spoken language in the 5th c. AD

  • Who is a mdayn / mdaýn? On the Carians in Egypt

    Zsolt Simon•ARTICLE•Egitto e Vicino Oriente•2022

  • Latin sāpō ‘hair-dye, soap’, the Germanic Words for Soap, and the Common Substrate of Celtic and Germanic

    Zsolt Simon•ARTICLE•Amsterdamer Beiträge zur älteren…•2021

This article argues that the traditional etymology of Latin sāpō as a loanword from the Germanic words for ‘soap’ is phonologically not possible. Instead, it proposes a phonologically regular explanation: a loanword in both Germanic and Latin from the common Celtic-Germanic substrate (with Gaulish transmission in the case of Latin)

  • Die karische Endung -τ

    Zsolt Simon•ARTICLE•Indogermanische Forschungen•2021

Based on the contextual analysis of the Carian inscription from Hyllarima (C.Hy 1) this paper argues that the Carian nominal ending - τ is neither genitive plural nor dative plural as previously proposed but ablative. This is supported both by its phonological history and its other attestions

  • Urindogermanische Lehnwörter in den uralischen und finno-ugrischen Grundsprachen

    Zsolt Simon•ARTICLE•Indogermanische Forschungen•2020

This paper contains a critical evaluation of the alleged Proto- Indo-European loanwords in Proto-Uralic and Proto-Finno-Ugric and argues that most of them cannot be upheld. It is also argued that currently it is not possible to choose between different scenarios for the remaining cases, i.e. sheer coincidence, borrowing from Proto-Indo-European, borrowing from a precursor of Tocharian, and a combination of any of these. Incidentally, this result …

  • Zur Herkunft von leuga

    Open Access•Zsolt Simon•ARTICLE•Acta Antiqua Academiae…•2020

According to the communis opinio , Lat. leuga was a Gaulish loanword, survived in the Romance languages and was borrowed into Old English. However, this scenario faces three unsolved problems: the non–Celtic diphthong – eu –, the Proto–Romance form * legua and the fact that the Old English word cannot continue the Latin form on phonological grounds. This paper argues that all these problems can regularly be solved by the reconstructed West German…

  • Awarikus und Warikas

    Zsolt Simon•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Assyriologie und…•2014

Based on the Hieroglyphic Luwian and Phoenician orthography and linguistics the first part of this paper demonstrates that, despite the communis opinio, Awa/ir(a/i)kus of the KARATEPE inscription and Wa/irikas of the ÇINEKÖY inscription cannot be identical. Accordingly, the second half of the paper discusses the chronology of these and other related inscriptions and proposes a new king list for Hiyawa

  • Tabal und die Tibarener

    Zsolt Simon•ARTICLE•Altorientalische Forschungen•2014

The Black Sea Coast tribe of the Tibarens mentioned in Classical sources is generally connected with Tabal in the Ancient Near Eastern studies. However, Classical scholars, following a scholion, treat them as Scythians, while they are identified as (Western) Kartvelians in the Kartvelological literature.Based on the close reading of the sources and philological analysis it will be argued in this paper that the Classicist point of view is based on …

  • A hettiták szíriában

    Zsolt Simon, Simon Zsolt•ARTICLE•Antik Tanulmányok•2013

A hettiták szíriai tevékenysége meglehetősen jól ismert írott forrásainkból. Ennek ellenére a szíriai hettita uralomnak meglehetősen kevés régészeti nyoma maradt fenn.

A hieroglif luvi KARKAMIŠ A4b feliraton említett Sura országának azonosítása mindmáig megoldatlan, noha ez a helynév adatolt más hieroglif luvi feliratokon is. Az összes szöveghely filológiai elemzését követően (kizárva azokat, amelyeket tévesen olvasnak Surának) a földrajzi, történeti és filológiai bizonyítékok alapján kijelenthető, hogy a hieroglif luvi KARKAMIŠ A4b és A6 feliratok Sura országa és a görög források anatóliai syriosai ugyanarra a…

  • Hettita toposzok a hieroglif luvi történetírásban. Megjegyzések a kontinuitás kérdéséhez

    Zsolt Simon•ARTICLE•Acta Antiqua Academiae…•2003

In this paper the author clarifies the so far uncertain etymology of Latin niger, nigra, nigrum, Greek ανιγρός, he offers a more precise etymology for Latin vafer-bafer-vabrum and suggests a working hypothesis for the origin of Latin pulcher. All of these explanations are based on a new rule of suffixation elaborated by the author
