Taken as a whole the half century from 1835 to 1885 was a periodof substantial economic growth in the United States. The population increased nearly fourfold, or at an annual rate in the neighborhood of 21⁄2 to 21⁄2 per cent per year. Estimates of the national income show a figure at the end of the period six- or sevenfold as large as that at the beginning, the equivalent of an average growdi rate of about 31⁄2 to 4 per cent per year. • Has Bank Supervision Been in Conflict With Monetary Policy

Clark Warburton•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1952

IN a recent article in this REVIEW 2 Mr. Robert V. Rosa refers to discussions of relation of bank supervision to by E. A. Goldenweiser, G. L. Bach, and a Subcommittee of Joint Committee on Economic Report. supervision is one of intangibles of control that has attracted considerable attention. . . Although none of writers would appear to believe that supervision can practicably serve as an active arm of and credit policy, Bach does rightly stress …

  • Monetary Velocity and the Rate of Interest

Clark Warburton•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1950

IN Dr. Tobin's rejoinder to my article of November I948,1 he greatly improves the visual presentation of the range in circuit velocity since I919. This does not solve the question of whether the decline in circuit velocity is more reasonably interpreted as the result of low interest rates or as a secular trend due to other socio-economic factors. His Charts 3 and 4 suggest that for the 12-year period, I9I9-30, there was a considerable correlation…

  • Monetary Velocity and Monetary Policy

Clark Warburton•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1948

T HE Keynesian concept of liquidity-preference is not a single idea, but like a prism has several facets. The views produced by a prism depend on the way it is turned and whether it is in motion or perfectly still. Users of the concept of liquidity-preference, like a person with a prism in his hand, may unconsciously turn it around and produce confused and changing images when they are seeking precision and clarity. This kind of effect appears to…

  • The Monetary Theory of Deficit Spending

Clark Warburton•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1945

THE effect of fiscal operations of government, particularly of the federal government, upon the national income stream has been the focal point of a large part of economic theory in recent years. This emphasis has been expressed in three forms: (i) logical analyses, frequently using the symbolism of mathematics, of relationships between government expenditures -particularly expenditures in excess of taxation or in excess of cash receipts other th…
