A gendered perspective on climate change adaptation strategies
Climate change impacts are distributed unequally, despite affecting the entire world and its inhabitants. Economically, socially and culturally deprived groups are more vulnerable to climate change impacts. Women comprise the majority among these vulnerable groups, and it is, therefore, crucial to stress gendered perspectives in climate change adaptation strategies that promote gender equality and sustainable development. To that end, this paper …
Embedding local values in Payments for Ecosystem Services for transformative change
Just Commons
The proper governance of agriculture water is crucial for meeting global food security and achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially when considering small-scale farmers in the Global South. Water management has been examined as a form of the commons for agriculture, but shortcomings in Ostrom’s Design Principles restrict the scope of analysis. There is an urgent need for a novel framework for informing theories and practices fou…

Institutional bricolage in payment for ecosystem services
Global discussion of payment for ecosystem services (PES) has moved beyond the simple notion of effecting environmental and livelihood improvement for participants. Worldwide trends in diabetes since 1980
BACKGROUND: One of the global targets for non-communicable diseases is to halt, by 2025, the rise in the age-standardised adult prevalence of diabetes at its 2010 levels. We aimed to estimate worldwide trends in diabetes, how likely it is for countries to achieve the global target, and how changes in prevalence, together with population growth and ageing, are affecting the number of adults with diabetes. METHODS: We pooled data from population-ba…
Rights to Benefit from Forest? A Case Study of the Timber Harvest Quota System in Southwest China
Although efforts in improving forest rights across developing countries are growing, de jure property rights and physical ownership of forests do not automatically enable farmers to obtain benefits from forests. Their access to forest benefits is limited by a range of legal and extralegal mechanisms. This case study describes a notable pattern of timber-harvest governance in China, in which centralized quota setting and allocation allow rent-seek…
