Willows and farmer resistance
This article describes willow scrubs and how, according to Danish farmers, they “sprout uncontrollably” in deindustrializing agricultural landscapes. Across Europe, the green transition of the agricultural sector has led to farmers’ protests, but in Denmark such expressions of discontent have been limited. Instead, willow scrubs have become a matter of concern after the retirement of peatland soil from production. Farmers find willows “ugly” and …

This article takes its ethnographic point of departure revenge killing among the Huaorani and Tagaeri-Taromenane (a group in voluntary isolation) living in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Since 2015 Ende Gelände has become the slogan of a growing anti-coal movement in Germany, which has united around protests against the continued expansion of lignite mining in the country. The slogan plays on the double of meaning of "an area coming to an end" and "a practice in an area being ended", pinpointing in this way both the main problem with mining and its possible solution. This article is concerned with the idea of societal 'spaciousness' and its relationship to individual and collective autonomy. These issues are analyzed in the context of the eviction of a self-managed social center of left-radical activists in Copenhagen and the protests and public debate that followed.
