  • D sedimentary architecture of sandy interbeds within massive lacustrine deposits – Lednica Lake, Poland

Open Access•Włodzimierz Juśkiewicz, Jakub Jaszewski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2026

The article presents an integrated reconstruction of sediment development and lake-floor morphology in the western part of Lednica Lake, an archaeological site in Poland, based on instrumental datasets, underwater investigations, and core analyses. Its main outcome is a 3D (4D) map and model synthesising bedforms, depositional-unit boundaries, and spatial relations between the inflow zone and the area of deposition. The results show that the sand…

  • Optically stimulated luminescence dating of ancient bricks from the Church of St James in Toruń, Poland

    Open Access•Natalia K Pawlak, Alicja Chruścińska et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•References: 22

The Church of St James in Toruń is one of Poland's most valuable Gothic monuments. According to the inscription preserved in the presbytery, the commonly accepted date when construction began is AD 1309. However, another hypothesis can also be found in the literature stating that the first brick temple in the location of the present church was built at a much earlier time. In this study, we apply luminescence dating to more than 30 bricks to supp…

  • A cut mark on the M esolithic (ca. 5850 BC) cranium from W ieliszew ( P oland)

    Open Access•J Tomczyk, A Myszka et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

We present the application of computed tomography (CT) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) technologies for the analysis of the Mesolithic skull of an adult individual from Wieliszew (Poland; ca. 5850 BC). Macroscopic examinations carried out in the 1950s showed a bone defect on the skull identified as post‐mortem. On this basis, it was argued to be evidence of cannibalistic practices in the Mesolithic period. CT and SEM demonstrated that the …

  • Anaemia (thalassaemia) in the Middle Euphrates Valley of Syria in the second-fourth centuries AD

Open Access•J Tomczyk, Piotr Palczewski et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2016•References: 31

  • A Probable Case of Thalassemia Intermedia from Tell Masaikh, Syria

    Open Access•J Tomczyk, Piotr Palczewski et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 19

In this report, we describe the first potential case of hereditary anaemia from the Middle Euphrates valley (Syria). The skeletal changes identified in the studied specimen were consistent with marrow hyperplasia, and the distribution, especially the involvement of the facial bones, the sternum and ribs, was suggestive of thalassemia. The identified haplotype indicates M4b1 haplogroup suggesting that the analysed specimen was either a newcomer fr…

  • Congenital syphilis in the skeleton of a child from Poland (Radom, 18th–19th century AD)

    Open Access•J Tomczyk, Hanna Mańkowska-Pliszka et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•2015

An incomplete skeleton of a 3-year-old child with suspected congenital syphilis was found in the Radom area of Poland. Squama frontalis and zygomatic bones are characterized by significant bone loss. Radiographic pictures show a geographic destructive lesion of a serpiginous shape surrounded by a zone of reactive osteosclerosis in the squama frontalis. The radiographic findings included a slight widening and contour irregularities of the distal h…
