Modelling the impact of cuts in US Pepfar funding for opioid agonist therapy and needle and syringe programmes on drug-related deaths and HIV and hepatitis C transmission among people who inject drugs
BACKGROUND: The US government paused funding for the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in 2025, including disruptions in funding for opioid agonist therapy (OAT) and needle and syringe programmes (NSP). We evaluated the impact of these disruptions on HIV/HCV transmission and drug-related deaths (DRDs) among people who inject drugs (PWID) for 9 countries where PEPFAR funds OAT. METHODS: We developed a static model of HIV/HCV t…
Gender differences in hepatitis C virus incidence in and out of opioid agonist treatment among people who inject drugs in Montréal, Canada, March 2011–March 2024
We found similar HCV incidence among women and men who inject drugs in Montréal; however, among OAT-eligible men, OAT engagement was strongly associated with a lower risk of HCV acquisition. These findings highlight that gender disparities in HCV, as observed in some settings, are not consistent. Further research is needed to determine factors underlying gender differences
Initiation, cessation and resumption of attendance at the Melbourne supervised injecting room among a cohort of people who inject drugs
We found high MSIR service uptake, relative to cessation. Attendance was higher among men, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, and those recently homeless, with frequent attenders injecting more often and those on OAT less likely to attend frequently
Characterising benzodiazepine use and the association with non-fatal overdose among people who inject opioids in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
Benzodiazepine use is common among PWIO in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and is associated with higher prevalence of non-fatal overdose. These findings underscore the need to strengthen overdose prevention and harm reduction efforts addressing benzodiazepine use across the UK
Impact of scaling up harm reduction interventions on injecting risk behaviours, ART outcomes and HIV incidence among people who inject drugs in Kenya
This study provides strong evidence for the benefits of NSP and OAT on varied HIV outcomes among PWID in Africa
Using modelling and public health surveillance data to evidence progress towards the WHO incidence target for hepatitis C elimination in people who inject drugs - a review of complementary approaches …
Trends in accidental drug overdose mortality in Canada
Canada's overdose epidemic reflects a segmented trajectory, with marked accelerations in 1996 and 2013, driven by healthcare practices, evolving drug markets, and social vulnerabilities. Regional and demographic disparities underscore the need for targeted, historically informed public health strategies
Overdose prevention centres as spaces of safety, trust and inclusion
Modeling the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on achieving HCV elimination amongst young and unstably housed people who inject drugs in San Francisco
The COVID-19 pandemic impeded progress toward achieving HCV elimination. Our findings indicate that existing partial rebounds in HCV testing and treatment may achieve the elimination goal by 2030, with an additional scale-up of interventions aimed at YPWID or unstably housed PWID ensuring San Francisco is likely to achieve elimination by 2030
Perceived availability and carriage of take-home naloxone and factors associated with carriage among people who inject drugs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
Injecting frequency trajectories and hepatitis C virus acquisition
Diversity of incarceration patterns among people who inject drugs and the association with incident hepatitis C virus infection
Socioeconomic stability is associated with lower injection frequency among people with distinct trajectories of injection drug use
Progress and remaining challenges to address hepatitis C, other infectious diseases, and drug-related harms to improve the health of people who use drugs
Transitioning from interferon-based to direct antiviral treatment options
Conceptualising access in the direct-acting antiviral era
Short-term injection drug use changes following hepatitis C virus (HCV) assessment and treatment among persons who inject drugs with acute HCV infection
Hepatitis C Virus seroconversion among persons who inject drugs in relation to primary care physician visiting
