How Theory-Laden Are Observations of Black Holes
We evaluate the roles general relativistic assumptions play in simulations used in recent observations of black holes including with LIGO-Virgo and the Event Horizon Telescope. In both experiments, simulations play an ampliative role, enabling the extraction of more information from the data than would be possible otherwise. This comes at a cost of theory-ladenness. Most tobacco use rates for adolescents do not take into account high school dropouts or students involved in alternative school settings. Project IMPACT (Innovative Methods for Peers Actively Controlling Tobacco) was a tobacco use prevention and cessation program for high-risk youth that tracked 680 continuation high school students for 18 months. Cigarette and alcohol use among migrant Hispanic adolescents
Reported alcohol and tobacco (ie, cigarette) use of 214 Hispanic migrant adolescents enrolled in the National Migrant Education Program in San Diego County was obtained. Level of acculturation was found to be related to alcohol use, ie, acculturated females had more drinks in their lifetime, and more acculturated males and females were more likely to binge drink in the last 30 days. Recent research suggests that battered women may have a problem-solving skill deficit, thereby limiting their ability to prevent and/or effectively deal with future battering incidents.
