Diagnosis of localized cutaneous leishmaniasis and treatment outcomes following carbon dioxide cryotherapy performed by health centre staff
In Ethiopia, the incidence of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is estimated to range from 20, 000–30, 000 new cases due to Leishmania aethiopica . Children and young adults, in rural communities with limited access to health care are most affected. The current standard of care, pentavalent sodium stibogluconate is only administered in specialist centres, has limited effectiveness and is associated with severe adverse effects. Cryotherapy is recommend…
Consortium‐Based Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement for Long Covid Research
BACKGROUND: At the start of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in early 2020, the long-term outcomes for survivors of COVID-19 were unknown. The PHOSP-COVID cohort study was set up at scale and pace in Spring 2020 to determine the short- to long-term health consequences of COVID-19 in post-hospitalisation survivors; to understand the impact of interventions during and after the acute illness on these long-term sequelae and to build …
Understanding experiences of neglected tropical diseases of the skin
BACKGROUND: The WHO and Ethiopia's Ministry of Health have developed strategies to expand and integrate services for co-endemic neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) which manifest in the skin. To inform these strategies, we aimed to understand the social, economic and health system context of skin NTD care in Kalu woreda, Amhara region, Ethiopia, where cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and leprosy are endemic. METHODS: Between October 2020 and May 2022,…
Integrating point-of-care screening for curable sexually transmitted infections with HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B screening in antenatal care services in Zimbabwe
Introduction Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in pregnancy are associated with adverse birth outcomes. We investigated the uptake and yield of point-of-care screening for Chlamydia trachomatis , Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Trichomonas vaginalis , integrated with HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B virus (HBV) screening in antenatal care (ANC) in Zimbabwe, and conducted a mixed-methods process evaluation of the strategy. Methods A prospective interv…
Evaluation of a novel point-of-care lateral flow assay screening for Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection among pregnant women in Zimbabwe
Affordable, easy-to-use and rapid diagnostics may support a move away from syndromic management for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in resource-constrained settings. A lateral flow assay for Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG-LFA) has shown high sensitivity and specificity (>90%) in symptomatic individuals. We investigated the performance and acceptability of this assay as a screening tool for NG among pregnant women. This evaluation was embedded w…
Ethnographic study of Buruli ulcer wound management practices in a traditional therapeutic setting in Ghana
Our findings suggest that the traditional healer enjoyed substantial public legitimacy from his clients due to his perceived interest in helping affected individuals achieve cures using culturally and financially appropriate ways to manage wounds. However, we also observed the use of non-sterile procedures and unregulated preparations, which may be potentially deleterious. The willingness of the traditional healer to collaborate with the formal h…
Development of an integrated and decentralised skin health strategy to improve experiences of skin neglected tropical diseases and other skin conditions in Atwima Mponua District, Ghana
Integrated strategies are recommended to tackle neglected tropical diseases of the skin (skin NTDs), which pose a substantial health and economic burden in many countries, including Ghana. We describe the development of an integrated and decentralised skin health strategy designed to improve experiences of skin NTDs in Atwima Mponua district in Ashanti Region. A multidisciplinary research team led an iterative process to develop an overall strate…
Health-seeking behaviour and beliefs around sore throat in The Gambia
Group A Streptococcus (Strep A) bacteria causes a broad spectrum of diseases. The most common manifestations of Strep A infection are sore throat and pus-producing skin infections such as impetigo. Complications of Strep A infection can lead to inflammation in the bones, muscles, joints, and internal organs causing acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease (RHD). In The Gambia, the RHD burden is thought to be very high. However, epidemiol…
Improving experiences of neglected tropical diseases of the skin
Integrated approaches to managing co-endemic neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) of the skin within primary healthcare services are complex and require tailoring to local contexts. We describe formative research in Atwima Mponua District in Ghana’s Ashanti Region designed to inform the development of a sustainable intervention to improve access to skin NTD care. We employed a convergent, parallel, mixed-methods design, collecting data from Februar…
Low prevalence of scabies and impetigo in Dakar/Senegal
Background Scabies, a parasitic infection caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var . hominis , is a public health problem with significant morbidity worldwide, particularly in low-resource countries. Impetigo, a complication of scabies infection, is a risk factor for sepsis, glomerulonephritis and possibly acute rheumatic fever. Currently, the majority of epidemiological data has been collected in rural populations in the Pacific with limited applicabilit…
Exchange on Nick Onuf’s ‘Metaphoricizing Modernity,’ Part III–Reconfiguration of Modernity and/as Metaphor(s)
In this Dossier, four scholars reflect on Nicholas Onuf’s leading article, ‘Metaphoricizing modernity’, (re)engaging with – and celebrating – more broadly Onuf’s groundbreaking work from different places, perspectives, and angles. Part III (re)engages with (his) reconfigurations of Modernity and/as metaphor(s), including an extensive, and much careful response from Onuf to those four scholars and their (re)readings published in this Dossier: Cele…
Changes in Solo and Partnered Sexual Behaviors following the First Covid-19 Wave
Objective: To determine individual- and country-level factors associated with self-reported changes in solo and partnered sexual behaviors in an international sample of adults during COVID-19. Methods: = 19,654) sexual/reproductive health before and during the first wave of COVID-19. We examined self-reported changes (three-point scale: decreased, no change, increased) in solo masturbation, hugging/holding hands/cuddling with a partner, sex with …
Optimizing Peer Distribution of Syphilis Self-Testing Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in China
Syphilis testing uptake is low among men who have sex with men (MSM) around the world. Syphilis self-testing (SST) may complement facility-based testing; the distribution model is yet to be explored. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of peer distribution of syphilis self-testing on promoting syphilis testing. We conducted a three-arm, unblinded, parallel individually randomized controlled trial among MSM in three cities in Guangdo…
Association between mobility, non-pharmaceutical interventions, and Covid-19 transmission in Ghana
Governments around the world have implemented non-pharmaceutical interventions to limit the transmission of COVID-19. Here we assess if increasing NPI stringency was associated with a reduction in COVID-19 cases in Ghana. While lockdowns and physical distancing have proven effective for reducing COVID-19 transmission, there is still limited understanding of how NPI measures are reflected in indicators of human mobility. Further, there is a lack o…
We've all got the virus inside us now
The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted ethnic minorities in the global north, evidenced by higher rates of transmission, morbidity, and mortality relative to population sizes. Orthodox Jewish neighbourhoods in London had extremely high SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence rates, reflecting patterns in Israel and the US. The aim of this paper is to examine how responsibilities over health protection are conveyed, and to what extent responsibil…
Electronic Data Management for Vaccine Trials in Low Resource Settings
Background: ODK provides software and standards that are popular solutions for off-grid electronic data collection and has substantial code overlap and interoperability with a number of related software products including CommCare, Enketo, Ona, SurveyCTO, and KoBoToolbox. These tools provide open-source options for off-grid use in public health data collection, management, analysis, and reporting. During the 2018–2020 Ebola epidemic in the North …
Estimation of scabies prevalence using simplified criteria and mapping procedures in three Pacific and southeast Asian countries
The scabies prevalence estimation using simplified criteria was similar to using the 2020 IACS criteria in high prevalence, tropical countries. The prevalence estimation was lower in the school-based survey in Timor-Leste. Mapping using simplified criteria may be a feasible and effective public health tool to identify priority regions for scabies control. Further work assessing use of simplified criteria for mapping in a field setting should be c…
Data collection for outbreak investigations
This is the first known Delphi process used to determine the minimum variables needed for an outbreak investigation. The subsequent development of the T0 form should help to improve the efficiency and standardisation of data collection during emergencies and ultimately the quality of the data collected during field investigation
Surprise and Suspense
This paper examines the challenges faced by the U.S. intelligence community (IC) in recognizing and responding to the elements inherent in asymmetric competition with China. We offer that cultural and procedural impediments are negatively impacting the community’s capabilities and argue that reliance on outdated methodologies and ad hoc technology acquisition to detect activities specific to asymmetric competition has allowed adversaries to explo…
Double Standards in Perceived Traits of Women Labeled Victims Versus Survivors
Composite Signatures Analyst Learning Tool (CSALT)
Analysts across the intelligence community (IC) face rapid growth in the volume of data to be transformed into intelligence. Dramatic growth in open source intelligence (OSINT) is being driven by digital news outlets, blogs, and social media, particularly in conflict zones that lack traditional infrastructure and communications networks. At the same time, the IC is experiencing a reduction of skilled senior analysts due to attrition and budget co…

Adult Attachment and the Perception of Emotional Expressions
According to adult attachment theory, individual differences in attachment‐related anxiety reflect variation in individuals' vigilance to cues relevant to appraising and monitoring the availability and responsiveness of significant others. To investigate this assumption, the authors adopted a morph movie paradigm in which participants were shown movies of faces in which an emotional facial expression changed gradually to a neutral one (Study 1) o…
