Associations of past-year stigma and psychosocial syndemic conditions
This secondary analysis of a mixed serostatus sample of Black sexual minority men (BSMM) used conditional inference tree methods to explore associations of past-year experienced stigma and psychosocial syndemic conditions. Experienced stigmas were attributed to race, sexuality, socioeconomic status, HIV status or some "other" reason. Psychosocial syndemic conditions studied included physical assault, intimate partner violence, polysubstance use, …

Lifetime Prevalence and Sociodemographic Correlates of Multifactorial Discrimination Among Middle-Aged and Older Adult Men Who Have Sex with Men
This study describes multifactorial discrimination (discrimination attributed to multiple social identities) among middle-aged and older adult MSM. MSM aged 40+ years (N = 1,193) enrolled in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study completed behavioral surveys ascertaining experiences of discrimination and their social identity attributions. Non-proportional odds regressions assessed multifactorial discrimination by age, race/ethnicity, HIV status, and …

State minimum wage laws and newly diagnosed cases of HIV among heterosexual black residents of US metropolitan areas
This ecologic cohort study explores the relationship between state minimum wage laws and rates of HIV diagnoses among heterosexual black residents of U.S metropolitan areas over an 8-year span. Specifically, we applied hierarchical linear modeling to investigate whether state-level variations in minimum wage laws, adjusted for cost-of-living and inflation, were associated with rates of new HIV diagnoses among heterosexual black residents of metro…

A Multi-US City Assessment of Awareness and Uptake of Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV Prevention Among Black Men and Transgender Women Who Have Sex with Men
Someone to count on
Though functional social support has been shown to serve as a protective factor for HIV viral load suppression in other populations, scant research has examined this relationship among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States. We assessed characteristics of social support, effects of social support on HIV viral load, and moderation by social support of the relationship between psychosocial indicators of a synergistic epidemic (syndemi…

Ethics of Online Assent
Individuals, including youth, often participate in online research without understanding the characteristics of studies they have agreed to be part of. We assessed the impact of including questions as part of the assent process by randomizing 568 youth to one of three groups: (a) asking youth to only read study information and then indicate their willingness to participate, (b) requiring youth to answer two questions about the study's risks and v…

Association of Co-Occurring Psychosocial Health Problems and Increased Vulnerability to HIV/Aids Among Urban Men Who Have Sex With Men
Objectives. We measured the extent to which a set of psychosocial health problems have an additive effect on increasing HIV risk among men who have sex with men (MSM). Methods. We conducted a cross-sectional household probability telephone sample of MSM in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. Results. Psychosocial health problems are highly intercorrelated among urban MSM. Greater numbers of health problems are significantly and pos…
Sexual and Gender Minority Health
We describe the emergence of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) health as a key area of study and practice for clinicians and public health professionals. We discuss the specific needs of LGBT populations on the basis of the most recent epidemiological and clinical investigations, methods for defining and measuring LGBT populations, and the barriers they face in obtaining appropriate care and services. We then discuss how clinicians a…

We conducted a meta-analysis of adolescent school-based studies that compared the likelihood of childhood abuse among sexual minorities vs sexual nonminorities. Results. Sexual minority individuals were on average 3.8, 1.2, 1.7, and 2.4 times more likely to experience sexual abuse, …

Sexual Risk for HIV Transmission among Singles-Bar Patrons in San Francisco
Sexual risk for HIV infection was measured among heterosexual male and female and homosexual male bar patrons in San Francisco. High levels of sexual risk for HIV transmission were reported, especially in comparison to other samples of heterosexual and homosexual populations in San Francisco. Raising Sexual Minority Youths’ Health Levels by Incorporating Resiliencies Into Health Promotion Efforts
Myriad health inequities that sexual minority youths (SMYs) experience have been documented over the past several decades. Evidence demonstrates that these are not a result of intrinsic characteristics; rather, they result from high levels of adversity that SMYs experience. Despite the pervasive marginalization that SMYs face, there is also evidence of great resilience within this population. It seems likely that if a culture of marginalization p…
