The attack is not over yet
Our study accentuates the long-term impact of the October 7, 2023, attack on the mental health of the Israeli population, particularly among citizens who were directly exposed to the attack. The findings highlight the need to provide rapid, nationwide assessments and triage for interventions for those who were at the first line of confronting the terrorists on one of the grimmest days in Israel's history. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, a…
Reducing self-stigma among survivors of childhood maltreatment
This is the first study to demonstrate the efficacy of a brief, cost-effective, and easily disseminated video-based intervention to reduce self-stigma among CM survivors. This approach could help empower individuals with a history of CM, potentially encouraging treatment-seeking. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)
War-related stressors and mental health
The findings underscore the role that a sense of betrayal may play in the relationships between economic and traumatic loss and mental health outcomes. Targeted interventions addressing betrayal may help mitigate these symptoms in civilians exposed to trauma. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved)
PTSD, depression, and anxiety after the October 7, 2023 attack in Israel
Background: The magnitude of the Oct 7, 2023 attack in southern Israel was without precedent. More than 1300 civilians were murdered, and 240 civilians were kidnapped and taken hostage. In this national cohort study, for which baseline outcome data were established before the attacks, a prospective assessment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) was conducted one month after the attack. Metho…
Explaining deep learning-based representations of resting state functional connectivity data
This study introduced latent contribution scores to interpret nonlinear patterns identified by VAEs. These scores effectively capture changes in each observed rsFC feature as the estimated latent representation changes, enabling an explainable deep learning model that better understands the underlying neural mechanisms of ASD
Treatment dropout among veterans and their families
Noncompletion rate at this study appeared relatively low compared to other veteran-based treatment centers, if still unfortunately substantial. Patients with comorbid MDD/PTSD and exposure-based therapies carried greater noncompletion risk due to the MDD component, and this should be considered in treatment planning. Ongoing discussion of dissatisfaction and patient discontinuation, in the context of a strong therapeutic alliance, might reduce no…
A pilot study of a stepped-care brief intervention to help psychologically-distressed women displaced by conflict in Bogotá, Colombia
The IPC intervention shows promise, but significant challenges remain for improving reach, adherence, and participant retention. We identified strategies and partnerships to redress some of the main study limitations
Marital satisfaction and trauma-related symptoms among injured survivors of terror attacks and their spouses
This study examined the relationships between marital satisfaction and trauma-related symptoms (i.e., post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety) among 105 couples of injured survivors of terror attacks and their spouses ( N = 210). Structural equation modeling and the actor-partner interdependence model were used to test the interdependence relationship between survivors' and spouses' marital satisfaction and trauma-related symptoms…

Dispositional optimism and self–esteem as competing predictors of acute symptoms of generalized anxiety disorders and dissociative experiences among civilians exposed to war trauma
Although previous studies have rarely examined predictors of acute emotional responses to war trauma, this "natural laboratory" study aimed to examine the role that individual differences in dispositional optimism and self-esteem play in the development of acute symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and dissociative experiences. A sample of 140 female adults exposed to missile and rocket fire during an eruption of violence in the Middle …
Posttraumatic stress reactions among Rwandan youth in the second year after the genocide
This study examines levels of traumatic stress reactions among youth attending school in the second year after the 1994 Rwandan genocide. From August to December 1995, the survey team visited 22 schools throughout Rwanda. The survey (n = 942; youth aged 8 to 19 years) assessed exposure to wartime violence and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., text r…
Intrapersonal Resilience Moderates the Association Between Exposure-Severity and PTSD Symptoms Among Civilians Exposed to the 2014 Israel–Gaza Conflict
Among civilians exposed to war trauma, the development of acute anxiety symptoms has been found to be positively associated with the severity of the traumatic exposure but negatively associated with intrapersonal resilience (optimism, hope, and self-esteem). No study to date has examined whether intrapersonal resilience plays a moderating role in the development of acute anxiety among individuals as they are exposed to trauma. This “natural labor…

Religiosity and mental health
This cross-sectional retrospective study examined self-perceived changes in importance of religious beliefs (RBs) following the attacks of September 11, 2001, and assessed their associations with complicated grief (CG), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and major depressive disorder (MDD). Data were collected from 608 participants 2.5 to 3.5 years after the attacks. Whereas the majority of the participants reported no change in importance of …
When home isn't a safe haven
This study examined a theoretically based mediation model including intensity of trauma exposure, adult attachment, perceived social support, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. The sample consisted of 135 Israeli students who were evacuated from a college campus located near the Israel–Gaza border in response to increased missile fire in the area. An Internet-based data collection procedure was used to survey the evacuees, who rem…
The effects of insecure attachment orientations and perceived social support on posttraumatic stress and depressive symptoms among civilians exposed to the 2009 Israel–Gaza war
Five Essential Elements of Immediate and Mid–Term Mass Trauma Intervention
Given the devastation caused by disasters and mass violence, it is critical that intervention policy be based on the most updated research findings. However, to date, no evidence-based consensus has been reached supporting a clear set of recommendations for intervention during the immediate and the mid-term post mass trauma phases. Because it is unlikely that there will be evidence in the near or mid-term future from clinical trials that cover th…
The psychology of ongoing threat
There are now replicated findings that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms related to the September 11, 2001, attacks occurred in large numbers of persons who did not fit the traditional definition of exposure to a traumatic event. These data are not explained by traditional epidemiologic "bull's eye" disaster models, which assume the psychological effects are narrowly, geographically circumscribed, or by existing models of PTSD onset. …
The Al Qaeda 9/11 instructions
A growing global concern about suicide attacks has led to attempts from various disciplines to understand the psychological profiles of persons willing to commit suicide terrorist attacks. Recent reports have suggested that more powerful explanatory models might be discovered using social psychological concepts, with a shift of focus from the individual to the group within which the individual acts and by which the individual is influenced. This …
Do Attachment and Hardiness Relate to Each Other and to Mental Health in Real-Life Stress
This study examines the associations among attachment styles, hardiness, and mental health in intensive real-life stress. Four hundred and thirty-four young Israeli men, candidates for service in an elite combat unit, were assessed towards the end of a highly demanding screening process. Secure attachment style was positively associated with overall hardiness, commitment, and control, whereas avoidant and ambivalent attachment styles were negativ…
The Aftermath of Captivity
This is an 18-year follow-up of 164 former prisoners of war (POWs) and 190 controls. The study examined long-term morbidity, psychophysiological complaints, and illness-related behaviors. Psychophysiological complaints were found to be significantly higher among the POWs than among the controls. A significant association was also found between such complaints and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The individual's degree of impairm…
