  • Outdoor mobility in senior housing residents and community-dwelling older people in different population density areas

    Open Access•Sini Siltanen, Essi-Mari Tuomola et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The location of a senior house is meaningful and optimal for outdoor mobility when within easy reach but not too near amenities. Poorer outdoor mobility among senior housing residents may reflect their adjustment to a new home environment and life situation, e.g., becoming a widow

  • Associations of Children’s Close Reading Distance and Time Spent Indoors with Myopia, Based on Parental Questionnaire

Open Access•Olavi Pärssinen, Essi Lassila et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

Purpose: To study the association of parents’ reports about their children’s near work and outdoor habits with myopia in their children. Methods: Data from a questionnaire study conducted in 1983 among Finnish schoolchildren were reanalyzed. Vision screening had been performed for all the schoolchildren (n = 4961) in the 1st, 5th, and 8th grades (7-, 11-, and 15-year-olds) in an area of Central Finland. The questionnaire, including information ab…

  • Active aging – resilience and external support as modifiers of the disablement outcome

Open Access•Taina Rantanen, Milla Saajanaho et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

The current study will renew research on positive gerontology through the novel approach to active aging and by suggesting new biomarkers of resilience and active aging. Therefore, high interdisciplinary impact is expected. This cross-sectional study will not provide knowledge on temporal order of events or causality, but an innovative cross-sectional dataset provides opportunities for emergence of novel creative hypotheses and theories

  • Changes in life-space mobility and quality of life among community-dwelling older people

Open Access•Merja Rantakokko, Erja Portegijs et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2015

  • Individual and environmental factors underlying life space of older people – study protocol and design of a cohort study on life-space mobility in old age (Lispe)

Open Access•Taina Rantanen, Erja Portegijs et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Our study, which includes extensive data collection with a large sample, provides a unique opportunity to study topics of importance for aging societies. A novel approach is employed which enables us to study the interactions of environmental features and individual characteristics underlying the life-space of older people. Potentially, the results of this study will contribute to improvements in strategies to postpone or prevent progression to d…

  • The structure of mortality during catastrophic years in a pre-industrial society

    Eino Jutikkala, Markku Kauppinen•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1971•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The aim of the study is to examine the way in which the pattern of mortality in a pre-industrial society differed in catastrophic years from that in 'normal' years. Five Finnish parishes with a total population of 21,000 in 1850 were examined. The deaths were classified by season, age and cause. The results support the theory that epidemics not directly connected with starvation were the main causes of mortality peaks
