  • Betting the House

    Open Access•Alyssa Hadley Dunn, C Aiden Downey•ARTICLE•Education and Urban Society•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 25

This study explores the impetus for and impact of four urban teachers’ extracurricular investments. Framing teacher investment as work voluntarily undertaken with an eye toward bringing about a highly desired, yet highly uncertain, end, we argue that the outcome of these often-hidden investments have identity and career implications for teachers. Through a comparison of two case studies in the southeast and northeast United States, we investigate…

  • Early career teacher attrition

D Jean Clandinin, Julie Long et al.•ARTICLE•Teaching Education•2015

Early career teacher attrition has most often been conceptualized as either a problem associated with individual factors (e.g. burnout) or a problem associated with contextual factors (e.g. support and salary). Open Access•C Aiden Downey•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Education Quarterly•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 15

The article offers new avenue…

C Aiden Downey, D Jean Clandinin et al.•BOOK•Narrative Conceptions of Knowledge•2014

The book volume shares six narrative accounts, which offer glimpses into the teachers' lives, which are composed with attention to place, temporality, and personal and social dimensions. By inquiring narratively into the experiences of these teachers, the book identifies the complex ways in which the teachers' personal practical knowledge is shaped by their personal knowledge landscapes as well as professional knowledge landscapes. Questions are …

  • Attending to changing landscapes

D Jean Clandinin, C Aiden Downey et al.•ARTICLE•Asia-Pacific Journal of Teacher…•2009

Teachers, in Canada and elsewhere, live and work on school landscapes being shifted by globalization, immigration, demographics, economic disparities and environmental changes. Within those landscapes teachers find themselves struggling to compose lives that allow them to live with respect and dignity in relation with children, youth and families. In places in Canada, increasing numbers of teachers are leaving after only a few years of teaching. …
