    비엣 탄 응우옌(Viet Thanh Nguyen)의 소설 『동조자(The Sympathizer)』(2015)는 베트남이 프랑스의 식민 통치 하에 있던 시절 프랑스인 아버지와 베트남인 어머니 사이에서 태어난 혼혈인을 주인공으로 하고 있다. 그는 소설의 서사를 이끌어가는 화자이자 베트콩의 스파이로서 미국 중심의 시각으로 씌어 왔던 베트남 전쟁 서사에 저항하는 방식의 글쓰기를 시도하며, 기존에 목소리 없는 피해자로만 여겨져 왔던 혼혈인 및 난민이라는 존재를 새롭게 해석해 낸다. 본 글에서는 혼혈인 주인공이 전쟁 난민 경험을 하며 세계의 주변부로 밀려남에도 그가 가진 서사적 권위를 활용하여 어떤 방식으로 중심부 역사 서술의 틈을 포착하고 균열을 내고 있는지를 살펴볼 것이다. 특히 그가 혼혈인을 비하하는 사람들로부터 들어야 했던 바스타드(bastard)라는 모멸적인 단어를 자신의 정체성을 이해하고 재구성…
