Vaccine hurdles for children in war-torn Somalia
The lowest national vaccine coverage and the highest proportion of zero-dose children were predominantly found in the Hirshabelle and Southwest states and among nomadic communities. This difference in vaccine coverage among states and communities is concerning and suggests the need for targeted intervention to address these gaps
Associations of socio-demographic factors with adiposity among immigrants in Norway
The findings of this study call attention to the importance of a greater understanding of the processes leading to obesity among certain immigrant groups in Norway. Moreover, there is a need for culturally adapted prevention strategies targeting immigrant men and women with high rates of overweight/obesity
Access to Norwegian healthcare system – challenges for sub-Saharan African immigrants
Healthcare is not equally accessible to all Norwegian residents. This ultimately leads to avoidance of the healthcare system by those most in need. Lack of seeking healthcare services by immigrants from Sub Saharan Africa may have significant implications for the long-term health of this group of immigrants. Therefore measures to address the issues raised should be prioritized and further examined
Health care-seeking patterns for female genital mutilation/cutting among young Somalis in Norway
Only one-fifth of the women with FGM/C sought care for FGM/C-related health problems. Our study does not provide the answers to why only a few of them sought care for FGM/C. For, we propose to conduct further research targeting girls and women who have undergone FGM/C to assess challenges in accessing health care services for proper int…
Health literacy
Enhanced health literacy will most likely increase the chance to better health outcomes for immigrants, thereby moving towards health equity in the Norwegian society. Therefore, policies and programs are required to focus and improve health literacy of immigrant communities
When female circumcision comes to the West
The study reveals that Somalis in Oslo demonstrate a trend to abandon this practice over time. Nevertheless, the 30% of the people who still support its continuation, and who are primarily newly arrived immigrants, require a targeted intervention that is implemented in the early phase of the immigrants' arrival
Armed conflicts have an impact on the spread of tuberculosis
Patients from conflict zones have a longer delay in receiving a diagnosis of TB and have higher levels of self treatment utilization. This suggests that access to TB care should be improved by the expansion of user friendly directly observed therapy short-course (DOTS) in the conflict zones of the region
Barriers and Facilitators to Civic Engagement Among Elderly African Immigrants in Oslo
Types of social capital resources and self-rated health among the Norwegian adult population
Among different types of network resources, close and strong friendship-based ties are of importance for people's health in Norway. Networks linking people to high-educated persons are also of importance. Measures aiming at strengthening these types of network resources for socially disadvantaged groups might reduce social inequalities in health
Pastoralism and delay in diagnosis of TB in Ethiopia
Patient delay observed among pastoralist TB patients in SRS is one of the highest reported so far from developing countries, exceeding two years in some patients. This long patient delay appears to be associated with patient's inadequate knowledge of the disease and distance to health care facility with nomadic pastoralists being the most affected. Regional TB control programmes need to consider the exceptional circumstances of pastoralists, to m…
