Community benefits of mass distribution of three types of dual-active-ingredient long-lasting insecticidal nets against malaria prevalence in Tanzania
Our study demonstrated that at a community usage of 40% or more of dual-AI LLINs non-users benefited from the presence of these nets. Noticeably, even when usage was ≤ 40% in the chlorfenapyr arm, non-users were better protected than non-users in the higher coverage pyrethroid-only arm. The greater difference in malaria risk observed between users and non-users indicates that LLINs play a crucial role in providing personal protection against mala…
Bio-efficacy of field aged novel class of long-lasting insecticidal nets, against pyrethroid-resistant malaria vectors in Tanzania
New classes of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), have been recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to control malaria vectors resistant to pyrethroid insecticides. This study was nested in a large-scale cluster-randomized controlled trial conducted (cRCT) in Tanzania. A series of experimental hut trials (EHTs) aimed to evaluate the bio-efficacy of trial LLINs on mosquito indicators most pertinent to malaria transmission over 3 ye…
Assessing risk factors for malaria and schistosomiasis among children in Misungwi, Tanzania, an area of co-endemicity
Malaria and schistosomiasis are two major parasitic vector-borne diseases that are a particular threat to young children in Sub-Saharan Africa. In the present study, we investigated factors that are associated with malaria, schistosomiasis, and co-infection among school-aged children, using an explanatory sequential mixed-methods approach. A cross-sectional study was conducted in January 2022 in Misungwi, Tanzania, that sampled 1,122 children age…
Protective efficacy of holed and aging PBO-pyrethroid synergist-treated nets on malaria infection prevalence in north-western Tanzania
Two billion pyrethroid long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have been distributed since 2004 for malaria prevention in Sub-Saharan Africa. Current malaria control strategies rely on an assumed effective 3-year lifespan for LLINs. PBO synergist LLINs are a newly recommended class of net but there is limited information on their life span and long-term protective efficacy in communities. To assess their operational survival, a cohort of 390 PBO L…
Perceptions, attitude and uptake of rapid syphilis testing services in antenatal clinics in North-Western Tanzania
Infection with syphilis during pregnancy could cause spontaneous abortion, low birth weight and stillbirth. To prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes caused by syphilis, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends syphilis screening and treatment of all pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) services. Rapid syphilis testing (RST) demonstration project was introduced at ANC clinics in Tanzania in 2009, to assess the feasibility, acceptabilit…
The costs of accessible quality assured syphilis diagnostics
OBJECTIVES: To determine the costs of Rapid Syphilis Test (RSTs) as compared with rapid plasma reagin (RPR) when implemented in a Tanzanian setting, and to determine the relative impact of a quality assurance (QA) system on the cost of RST implementation. METHODS: The incremental costs for RPR and RST screening programmes in existing antenatal care settings in Geita District, Tanzania were collected for 9 months in subsequent years from nine heal…
Traditional male circumcision practices among the Kurya of North-eastern Tanzania and implications for national programmes
The World Health Organisation and the Joint United Nations Programme on AIDS recommend male circumcision (MC) as an additional intervention against HIV infection. Various sub-Saharan African countries are at different stages of rolling out MC programmes. Despite initial fears, studies conducted among traditionally non-circumcising communities in Africa have shown that MC is widely accepted as a biomedical intervention. However, little is known on…
Acceptability of medical male circumcision in the traditionally circumcising communities in Northern Tanzania
There is a shift of preference from traditional male circumcision to medical male circumcision in this traditionally circumcising population. However, this preference has not changed the circumcision practices in the communities because of the community social pressure. Male circumcision national program should take advantage of this preference of medical male circumcision by introducing safe and affordable circumcision services and mobilising co…
Policy environment and male circumcision for HIV prevention
Findings from the situation analysis in Tanzania have shown that despite the absence of a specific policy on MC, basic elements of enabling policy environment at national, regional, district and community levels are in place for the implementation of MC scale up programme
