Marital Choice in Sub-Saharan Africa
A transformation is underway in family and marital processes in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. With the exception of recent research with an emphasis on childbearing issues, few researchers have analyzed these on-going developments. Using Ghana as a case study, this article examines the context of mate selection among men and women. We also compare the effect of structural as opposed to cultural factors on contemporary mate selection patterns.…
Lesbian Stepfamilies
Cherlin's (1978) model of remarriage as an incomplete institution is used to show how lesbian families' experiences are similar to and different from those in heterosexual stepfamilies. We examine how heterosexism and homophobia enhance the marginalization of lesbian stepfamilies. Despite the importance of the partner's role in the family, much of the lesbian stepfamily research neglects her. Ways to involve the partner's perspective in practice …
Adjustment to Violent and Natural Deaths in Later and Earlier Life for Black and White Widows
Results of smaller studies on the minimal role of mode of death in bereavement are supported, but more research on age, race, and "off-time" deaths in short- and long-term adjustment is needed
Stressful Life Events, Social Support, and the Distress of Widowed and Divorced Women
Samples of widowed and divorced women drawn from public death and divorce records and matched on age, race, and median income of census tract of residence were used to test Ensel and Lin's (1991) counteractive model of the relationships among stress, social support, and distress. By using measures of identity relevance and identity disruption, we examined differences and similarities in the adjustment process for women who lost a spouse through death or divorce. We expected widowhood would be more disruptive of identity and more distressing than divorce. Those who file for divorce but whose petitions are withdrawn or dismissed report higher rates of psychological distress than control group samples of divorced and married people. Reconciled couples experience high levels of domestic violence and have more serious marital complaints than those who divorce, but are not especially likely to seek professional help. Using data from a survey of divorced and separated men and women, this study suggests that family help is less likely to be provided when the families are themselves experiencing life change events or disapprove of the divorce decision. Family help does tend to be forthcoming, however, when respondents are simultaneously undergoing other life stressors in addition to the divorce experience
