An Alternative Reconstruction of Proto-Totonac-Tepehua
This paper presents a reconstruction of the phonological inventory of Proto-Totonac-Tepehua (PTT) that differs significantly from previous reconstructions. The chief difference is that the PTT inventory proposed here includes a series of glottalized stops and affricates and does not include a series of laryngealized vowels. A Sketch of Pisaflores Tepehua Phonology
Pisaflores Tepehua is an endangered language spoken by roughly 2,500 people in the state of Veracruz in Mexico. It is one of three Tepehua languages which belong to the Totonac-Tepehua language family. This paper provides a description of Pisaflores Tepehua phonology, focusing on the phonemic inventory, allophonic variation, phonological processes, syllable structure, and stress assignment. Symmetrical Objects in Misantla Totonac
In this paper, we present evidence that Misantla Totonac, a Totonac‐Tepehua language spoken in the vicinity of Misantla, Veracruz, in Mexico, is a symmetrical object language in the sense of Bresnan and Moshi (1990). Specifically, we demonstrate that in Misantla Totonac both of the objects of a ditransitive verb exhibit the behavior of the single object of a transitive verb. Reciprocal /laa-/ in Totonacan
In Totonacan languages, the verbal prefix /laa‐/ 'recip' occurs on transitive and ditransitive verbs to mark a reciprocal relation between a subject and a direct or indirect object. In many of the languages, this prefix also occurs on regular, nonreciprocal verbs to mark subject/object combinations involving only local (first‐ or second‐person) participants.
