Paying Friends, Family Members, or Strangers to Be Home-Based Personal Assistants
This study describes consumers who hire friends, family members, or strangers as paid personal assistants and compares service satisfaction among the three groups. From surveying 511 consumers of self-directed home care services, the authors found that consumers who hire friends as workers are younger and more educated than consumers who hire family members and strangers, and they are more impaired than consumers with strangers as workers. This article describes a longitudinal case study of 11 independent living centers (ILCs) that received funding in the early 1990s from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for the purpose of improving service systems for people with disabilities. A Normative Analysis of Home Care Goals
Home- and community-based services (HCBS) can contribute to full social and economic participation in society by people with disabilities. Of 16 client-level and system-level HCBS goals, three are emphasized; targeting the neediest, individual choice, and strengthening informal systems. Skilled nursing facility care for persons with Aids
We compared average daily hours of care for patients with and without acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in a hospital-based skilled nursing facility. Patients with AIDS averaged over an hour more direct nursing care per patient day (6.5 vs 5.4 hours). These findings support other reports of greater nursing time and higher costs of caring for nursing home patients with AIDS
