Race-Based Sexual Stereotyping and Sexual Partnering Among Men Who Use the Internet to Identify Other Men for Bareback Sex
This qualitative study used sexual scripting theory to explore sexual stereotyping and sexual partnering practices among a racially diverse sample of men who use the Internet to engage in "bareback" sex with other men. The sample included 81 (73%) HIV-negative and 30 (27%) HIV-positive men who were recruited on Web sites where men seek other men to have bareback sex. Participants completed a semi-structured interview that included topics on their…
Barebacking
Intentional condomless anal sex in HIV-risk contexts ("barebacking") has been heatedly debated in gay circles, the gay media, and, to a lesser degree, the mainstream media. Yet it has received little attention in the scientific literature. In order to better understand the reasons behind this behavior, we conducted a content analysis of messages posted on an Internet message board following Gay.com's decision to close a company-sponsored bareback…
Data Quality in HIV/Aids Web-Based Surveys
Invalid data may compromise data quality. We examined how decisions made to handle these data may affect the relationship between Internet use and HIV risk behaviors in a sample of young men who have sex with men (YMSM). We recorded 548 entries during the 3-month period and created six analytic groups (i.e., full sample, entries initially tagged as valid, suspicious entries, valid cases mislabeled as suspicious, fraudulent data, and total valid c…

Sexual Negotiation, HIV-Status Disclosure, and Sexual Risk Behavior Among Latino Men Who Use the Internet to Seek Sex with Other Men
Childhood sexual experiences and the perception of abuse among latino men who have sex with men
There is a lack of consensus on how to define childhood sexual abuse (CSA). In this study we explore the perceptions of CSA among men who had such experiences. One hundred Latino men (predominately gay) who had childhood sexual experiences with an older partner (CSEOP) were asked whether they considered their experiences sexual abuse (41 said no; 59 said yes). Those who felt abused were younger when the events happened and were more likely to hav…
Domestic Abuse and HIV-Risk Behavior in Latin American Men Who Have Sex with Men in New York City
This study was conducted with 273 Latin American men who have sex with men living in the New York metropolitan area. The results show that 51% of the men reported having experienced domestic abuse at least once in their relationships. Up to 12% of these men had been forced to have receptive anal sex without condoms by one of their partners since 1981. Thirty-three percent of the respondents reported having experienced verbal and psychological abu…
Reliability of sexual behavior self‐reports in male couples of discordant HIV status
Seventy‐five male couples, where one member was HIV‐positive and his partner was HIV‐negative, were assessed concerning anal sexual‐risk behavior. Subsequently, the reliability of their self‐reports was determined by two methods: (a) by comparing the separate reports of each member of the couple and (b) by a one week test‐retest of 27 individuals. Both quantitative and qualitative assessment methods were used. Approximately half of the men had pr…
Recalled Sexual Experiences in Childhood with Older Partners
Inner Contradictions Among Men Who Bareback
Barebacking, or intentional unprotected anal intercourse when HIV transmission can occur, emerged as a descriptive term in the 1990s, and marked greater acceptance by gay and bisexual men of dispensing with condom use under certain circumstances. In an exploratory study of men who used Internet sites to meet partners and reported recent episodes of barebacking, respondents outlined numerous strategies they deployed to avoid HIV infection instead …
Will Gay and Bisexually Active Men at High Risk of Infection Use Over-the-Counter Rapid HIV Tests to Screen Sexual Partners
The Food and Drug Administration may license OraQuickTM, a rapid HIV test, for over-the-counter (OTC) sale. This study investigated whether HIV-uninfected, non-monogamous, gay and bisexual men who never or rarely use condoms would use the test with partners as a harm-reduction approach. Sixty participants responded to two computer-assisted self-interviews, underwent an in-depth interview, and chose whether to test themselves with OraQuick. Over 8…
HIV risk behaviors and obstacles to condom use among Puerto Rican men in New York City who have sex with men
OBJECTIVES: This paper describes the sexual risk behaviors of Puerto Rican men who have sex with men and their perceived obstacles to condom use. METHODS: Interviews were conducted with 182 Puerto Rican men living in New York, NY. RESULTS: Condoms were used inconsistently or not at all by half of the men who had anal sex with other men, by two thirds of the men who had vaginal sex, and by three fifths of those who had anal sex with women. Most of…
Women's Experiences with Anal Sex
Women who perceive condom use during anal sex as limiting their pleasure or intimacy may be at increased risk for acquiring HIV. Consequently, interventions to promote safer anal intercourse must find a way to increase the use of barrier methods without decreasing pleasure or perceived intimacy between sexual partners
The Challenge of Staying HIV-Negative for Latin American Immigrants
Homophobia, fueled by the anti-homosexual rhetoric of the Catholic church, is rampant in most Latin American countries. This conceptual paper postulates that, in the same way that ethnic culture is deeply entrenched in Latin American groups living in the U.S., transgression of social rules, as a gay-survival strategy, is an intrinsic part of Latin American gay men's psychological functioning. Many of these men, who experience moving to the U.S. a…
HIV knowledge and related sexual practices among Portuguese men who have sex with men
Qualitative studies of the sexual risk practices of Portuguese men who have sex with men (MSM) are scarce, as have been campaigns to target this group despite high HIV infection rates. This study investigates the concepts and practices of safer sex of a group of 36 Portuguese self-identified gay men (age: x = 34.4, SD = 9.1) who have met sexual partners online; two identified as HIV positive. Thematic analysis of interviews showed that our partic…
Sexual use of the internet
An ongoing scientific and cultural debate has questioned whether using the internet has changed users in relevant ways. We investigated whether men who have sex with men and who use the internet to meet sexual partners consequently perceived any changes in themselves and in others. We interviewed 36 men and conducted a thematic analysis of the interview transcripts. Results suggest that many men perceived both sexual and non-sexual self-changes, …
Influence of Partner Type on Acceptability and Likelihood of Use of a Rectal Microbicide Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men in the United States and Puerto Rico
This study examined how acceptability of placebo gel with receptive anal intercourse (RAI) and likelihood of future rectal microbicide use varied across partner types. Because no rectal microbicide is available yet, use of placebo permitted the study of gel use behavior in real-life circumstances. A total of 87 men who have sex with men (MSM) aged 18 to 30 years inserted placebo gel rectally before RAI during 12 weeks. Using mixed-methods design,…

Association between history of childhood sexual abuse and adult HIV-risk sexual behavior in puerto rican men who have sex with men
Intimacy and sexual risk behaviour in serodiscordant male couples
Several studies have demonstrated individual-level determinants of HIV sexual risk behaviour. Very little research has been conducted to identify couple-level factors associated with unsafe sexual behaviour. As part of a three-year study of more than 100 serodiscordant male couples, we conducted an in-depth qualitative study of 15 Latino and non-Latino male couples via focus groups and a follow-up telephone survey. We identified the sexual risk b…

Levels and correlates of psychological distress in male couples of mixed HIV status
Few studies have analyzed the impact of HIV infection on dyadic functioning and on the distress levels of each partner, independently, in HIV-serodiscordant relationships, particularly in same-sex dyads. The main purpose of this study was to assess levels of psychological distress in the HIV-positive and HIV-negative members of HIV-discordant male couples and to explore possible couple-related factors associated with distress. This was done withi…
Looking for a tall, dark, macho man … sexual‐role behaviour variations in Latino gay and bisexual men
A community recruited sample of Latino gay and bisexual men in New York were asked to indicate their likelihood of adopting the insertive (activo) or receptive (pasivo) roles in oral and anal sex according to partners' characteristics. The results show that gender stereotypes of masculinity and femininity play an important role in the sexual behaviour of this population. Versatile individuals report higher likelihood of taking a pasivo sexual rol…

Couple-focused support to improve HIV medication adherence
OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of a couple-based intervention to improve medication-taking behavior in a clinic population with demonstrated adherence problems. DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial (SMART Couples Study) conducted between August 2000 and January 2004. SETTING: Two HIV/AIDS outpatient clinics in New York City. PARTICIPANTS: Heterosexual and homosexual HIV-serodiscordant couples (n = 215) in which the HIV-seropositive partner ha…
A randomized controlled trial to test an HIV-prevention intervention for Latino gay and bisexual men
At the time of this writing, no randomized controlled trial (RCT) of an intervention to reduce unsafe sex among Latino gay and bisexual men (LGBM) had been published. We report the results of an RCT conducted in New York City in which 180 LGBM were assigned either to an intervention developed specifically for this population or to a wait-list control group. The intervention was based on empowerment theory and used factors identified in prior rese…

Acceptability of tenofovir gel as a vaginal microbicide by US male participants in a Phase I clinical trial (HPTN 050)
We studied the acceptability of tenofovir gel among HIV-infected and uninfected men who were exposed to it during vaginal intercourse. The gel was found to be highly acceptable to most men, the large majority indicating they would probably use it in the future if they were concerned about HIV and the product were available. Men liked the gel's transparency and odorless qualities, although reactions to its viscosity were more varied. Men acknowled…

Knowledge and acceptability of alternative HIV prevention bio-medical products among MSM who bareback
Condom use is the best available strategy to prevent HIV infection during sexual intercourse. However, since many people choose not to use condoms in circumstances in which HIV risk exists, alternatives to condom use for HIV prevention are needed. Currently there are several alternative bio-medical HIV-prevention products in different stages of development: microbicides, vaccines, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP…
Taking it Like a Man
Gay men's use of the internet for social and sexual purposes is now so common that some predict an end to gay bars. In New York City, where this study took place, the use of the internet by men to meet other men seeking sex without condoms, called bareback sex, has created concerns among public health and gay community HIV/AIDS workers. This study of six popular bareback internet sites seeks to understand the nature of this new online sexual cult…
HIV Risk and the Internet
Assessing Motivations to Engage in Intentional Condomless Anal Intercourse in HIV Risk Contexts (“Bareback Sex”) among Men Who Have Sex With Men
Although condom use is an effective barrier against HIV transmission, some men who have sex with men (MSM) engage in bareback sex (unprotected anal sex in risky contexts) and increase their risk for HIV (re)infection. Understanding MSM's decision to bareback (vis-à-vis condom use) is essential to develop effective HIV/AIDS prevention programs for this population. An ethnically diverse sample of men who bareback (n = 120) was recruited exclusively…
