Participant Perceptions of the Acceptability, Feasibility, and Perceived Impact of the Thiwáhe Gluwáš’akapi Substance Use Prevention Program for American Indian Youth
(1) Background: This study aimed to examine adult participants perceptions of the Thiwáhe Gluwáš'akapi (TG) program. We recruited 13 of 85 (15.3%) adult participants from various previous cohorts of the TG program, separated into lower and higher participation groups. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted. This study was conducted on a Northern Plains reservation, and interviews took place via phone. (2) Methods: Semi-structured i…
Co‐creating a conceptual model of Indigenous relational wellbeing in early childhood
The purpose of this article is to share our story of conceptualizing Indigenous early relational wellbeing (ERW), specifically reflecting American Indian and Alaska Native worldviews. Our approach is grounded in Indigenous methodologies and guided by a Community of Learning comprised of Indigenous and allied Tribal early childhood community partners, researchers, practitioners, and federal funders. We describe the steps we took to conceptualize c…
Flexibility and resilience in equity-centered research
Meaningful and effective community engagement lies at the core of equity-centered research, which is a powerful tool for addressing health disparities in American Indian (AI) communities. It is essential for centering Indigenous wisdom as a source of solutions and disrupting Western-centric perspectives and inequitable and exclusionary research practices. This paper reports on lessons learned implementing an effectiveness trial of the Thiwáhe Glú…
Grounding evidence-based prevention within cultural context
Background : Effective substance use prevention strategies are needed for American Indian (AI) youth, who face disproportionate risk for early substance use and consequently bear a disproportionate burden of health and developmental disparities related to early use. With few exceptions, significant advances in prevention science have largely excluded this population, leaving gaps in the evidence of effective practice. This paper builds on emergin…
Crisis-Resilient and Antiracist Approaches to Community-Based Participatory Research During Covid-19 and Beyond
Social and health inequities among communities of color are deeply embedded in the United States and were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is a powerful approach to advance health equity. However, emergencies both as global as a pandemic or as local as a forest fire have the power to interrupt research programs and weaken community relationships. Drawing from Public Health Critical Race Praxis (P…
Exploring the feasibility of validating early developmental screening tools for American Indian and Alaska Native children
Screening children from birth through age 5 is critical to early identification of challenges and referral to intervention to support optimal development. Screening of American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) children lags behind that of other children, partly due to the lack of screening tools validated for this population. This study tested the feasibility of an online data collection strategy for use in a future study of the validity of existi…
Community perspectives on developmental screening of American Indian and Alaska Native children
Children are highly regarded and treasured as the future of American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) communities. Developmental disorders, however, are more frequently undiagnosed and untreated in AIAN children compared to others in the United States. Developmental screening can help communities ensure that their children reach their full potential, but lack of culturally sensitive and valid screening measures complicates screening among AIAN chi…
Measure of Socialization of American Indian Children (Mosaic)
Dimensions of ERS common to measures developed for other populations emerged as relevant for AI families, with adaptations to reflect the unique context of this population. Further work is needed to confirm the structure of the MOSAIC in both this AI community and with other diverse indigenous populations. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved
Moving the prevention timeline
INTRODUCTION: Sexual health disparities are leading causes of morbidity among youth of color in the United States. We conducted a scoping review of the literature on precursors to sexual risk-taking among young adolescents of color (ages 10-14) to assess precedents of sexual experience and their utility as measurable proximal constructs and behaviors gauging sexual risk and sexual risk prevention efforts. METHODS: This study was conducted using t…

Development of a Prototype System for Statewide Asthma Surveillance
Objectives. We developed and evaluated a statewide and community-level asthma surveillance system. Methods. Databases and measures included a community prevalence survey, hospital admissions data, emergency department/outpatient clinic visit records, and a physician survey of diagnosis and treatment practices. We evaluated the system in 5 Maine communities varying in population and income. Results. Asthma hospitalizations were high in the rural/l…
Risk Factors for Youth Victimization
Past efforts to understand the risks for youth victimization have primarily utilized concepts from lifestyle or routine activity theory, such as the increased exposure and reduced guardianship that are entailed when youth engage in risky or delinquent behavior. In this article, we argue that other personal characteristics put youth at risk, not through any lifestyle or routine activity mechanism, but by making certain youth more “congruent” with …
Victimization prevention programs for children
OBJECTIVE. This study examined whether victimization prevention instruction in school has any impact on children's behavior in situations of real victimization threat. METHODS. Telephone interviews were conducted in 1992 with a nationally representative sample of youths aged 10 to 16 and their caretakers, and the experience of 1457 of these children was followed up more than a year later. RESULTS. Exposure to a more comprehensive prevention progr…
