Correlates of Derived Cannabis Product Awareness, Knowledge, Use, and Use Intentions Among Young Adults
Derived psychoactive cannabis products (DPCPs) are chemically synthesized and intoxicating. Despite their widespread use, factors associated with DPCP use remain largely unknown. We analyzed 2023 survey data among 4,031 U.S. young adults (48.9% past-month cannabis use per study design). Multivariable regressions examined sociodemographics in relation to DPCP awareness (yes/no) and patterns of DPCP knowledge, derived based on latent class analysis…
Psychedelic Use, Microdosing, Motives, and Information and Product Sources Among Young Adults in the United States
26.38, ~50% past-month cannabis use by design) completed an online survey. Multivariable regression assessed sociodemographics, mental health, and adverse childhood events (ACEs) in relation to: (1) past-year psychedelic use; and (2) among those reporting lifetime use: (a) lifetime microdosing and (b) use motives. Lifetime and past-year psychedelic use were 27.7% and 11.9% (commonly psilocybin/amanita, MDMA, and LSD); 48.8% used only for nonmedic…
Cannabis and Psychedelics Among U.S. Young Adults
This study assessed the correlates of cannabis and psychedelic use and legalization support among young adults in the United States (US). Using 2025 data among adults ages 18-34 ( n = 3227), we assessed cannabis and psychedelic message exposure and perceptions, mental health symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-4 [PHQ-4]), and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in relation to past-6-month cannabis use (40.5%), past-year psychedelic use (11.9%…
Socio-political indicators of food insecurity
Objective: Food insecurity (FI) prevalence has increased globally, including the United States (US), and disproportionately affects certain subgroups (e.g. women). Both food-related and non-food-related sociopolitical indicators may impact FI rates; however, these associations are underexplored. This study assessed select state-level sociopolitical indicators among states with higher and lower FI rates compared to the national average. Design: Cr…
Urban–rural social security, adult children’s layoffs and older parents’ health
Objective: Aging population and rising unemployment risks have emerged as dual challenges for governments worldwide. Using China's 1990s state-owned enterprise layoffs as a natural experiment, we examine causal evidence on how adult children's unemployment affects older parents' health. We particularly analyze how urban-rural social security moderates these effects. Methods: Using data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey 1991-2006, we cons…
Healthcare deprivation matters
Objectives Aging anxiety is not only a health issue but also a stress response to the structural risk of insufficient medical resources. This study aims to reveal the impact of aging anxiety on individual healthcare utilization and the complex psychosocial mechanisms behind it. Methods Based on large-scale data from the 2021 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS), the study employs a Double Machine Learning (DML) method to build a causal inference …
A Peek at Cesuo as Nonhuman Online Fan Persona on Weibo
As media platforms expand, fan communities reshape both the industry and the ways to interact. Cesuo [厕所, toilet], unlike algorithmic social bots, is user-operated: real individuals enforce norms, moderate content, and coordinate discourse—while mimicking bot-like behaviour. This distinctive form of information exchange in Chinese internet culture plays a dual role in fandom, functioning as both an organisational tool and a mechanism of identity …
Associations Between Cannabis Messaging and Derived Psychoactive Cannabis Product Perceptions, Use, and Use Intentions Among a Sample of US Young Adults
Background Since the 2018 Agricultural Improvement Act, derived intoxicating cannabis products (DICPs) emerged as largely unregulated products; meanwhile, traditional cannabis use has increased. To inform effective prevention, research is needed to assess differences in motives for using cannabis only versus both cannabis and DICPs, as well as use-related consequences. Methods We analyzed survey data (June–November 2023) from 4,031 US young adults…
State Preemption and Local Tobacco Control
State preemption of local laws may impede tobacco control, yet little research has examined local policy activity before, during, and after preemption. This study addresses this gap. We summarized state laws preempting local smoke-free workplace, youth access, and licensure laws (CDC's STATE) and local legislative activity before, during, and after preemption (Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation) across 1999-2021. Preemption existed for s…

Israel's repeal of a sweet beverages tax harms public health
The consumption of sweet beverages exerts negative consequences on both individual and public health, and their low prices do not reflect the concomitant internalities and externalities.( 1 ) Sweet beverage consumption promotes weight gain in children and adults. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 48 studies in children and 37 studies in adults demonstrates that 1-serving/d greater intake of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with a 0.…

Marijuana Use and Increases in Use over Time among Young Adult College Students in the State of Georgia
Background While research has assessed correlates of marijuana use, there has been less focus on predictors of differing levels of changes in use during young adulthood, a critical period for use/escalation.Objectives We examined changes in marijuana use and related sociocontextual predictors (e.g., earlier-onset substance use, parental use, college type). Methods Using data from Georgia college students (ages 18–25 years) in a 2-year, 6-wave long…
How Preemption Can Lead to Inequity
American cities and localities have historically been places of innovation and incubation when it comes to advancing equity and inclusion. Now, local governments in many states are leading the fight for stronger public health protections against COVID-19-through mask mandates, stay-at-home orders, and paid leave provisions, among other actions. However, state lawmakers have long used preemption-state laws that block, override, or limit local ordi…

Perceived Impact of Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Allocation Strategy
Studies on health care demand have indicated high levels of public satisfaction with Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI). However, the global budget allocation mechanism (GBAM) used by NHI has led to various adjustments in the providers' way of practice, quality of care, utilization of care, and health expenditure. Studies focusing on the satisfaction of providers with health care supply, however, remain limited. We therefore explored the pr…
Examining the spatiotemporal evolution of vaccine refusal
We found an observable spatial structure to vaccine refusal and NME use over time, which appeared to be a self-reinforcing process, as well as a spatially diffusive process. Importantly, we found evidence that use of NMEs in the initially isolated regions appeared to stimulate vaccine refusal in geographically proximal regions. Thus, our results suggest that efforts aimed at decreasing future NME use may be most effective if they target regions w…
Players' Value Structure in Digital Games
The rapid advancement of digital games has not only brought entertainment to consumers but also triggered gamers' motivation to play. This study attempts to examine the structure of "attribute-consequence-value" chains of digital games based on the theoretical framework of means-end chains (MECs) and soft laddering interview technique. Results of the study reveal that players pay attention to game attributes including connection system, popular, …

Relationship Between Malpractice Litigation Pressure and Rates of Cesarean Section and Vaginal Birth After Cesarean Section
BACKGROUND: Since the 1990s, nationwide rates of vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC) have decreased sharply and rates of cesarean section have increased sharply. Both trends are consistent with clinical behavior aimed at reducing obstetricians' exposure to malpractice litigation. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the effects of malpractice pressure on rates of VBAC and cesarean section. RESEARCH DESIGN, SUBJECTS, MEASURES: We used state-level longit…
