  • Regional variability in faecal bile acids and its implications for species identification in archaeology

    Open Access•Basira Mir-Makhamad, Daniel G Vassão et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2026

Faecal bile acids (BAs) are increasingly used in archaeological studies to detect domesticated species and reconstruct herding practices. However, it is unclear how environmental factors influence BA profiles and how much these profiles vary across regions. This uncertainty raises questions about their reliability for species-specific identifications across diverse settings. To address this, we analysed faecal BA profiles from free-grazing sheep …

  • Utilizing morphometric method based on elliptic fourier analysis to identify cranial modification caused by cradleboard in Khuzestan, Southwestern Iran

    Open Access•Mahdi Alirezazadeh, Hamed Vahdati Nasab•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2026•References: 20

  • A Young Woman From the Fifth Millennium BCE in Chega Sofla Cemetery With a Modified and Hinge Fractured Cranium, Southwestern Iran

    Open Access•Mahdi Alirezazadeh, Hamed Vahdati Nasab•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Excavations at the Chega Sofla Cemetery in southwestern Iran, fifth millennium BCE , revealed intentionally modified skulls, including BG1.12, a young woman with cranial binding and hinge fractures. Cranial bandaging changes the morphology of the skull, which affects biomechanics. Based on these factors, this study investigated fractures and objects involved in trauma. The impact fractured both the left parietal and frontal bones. CT scan images …

  • Using the morphometric approach to analyze artificially modified crania from the late fifth millennium BCE settlement of Chega Sofla, southwestern Iran

Open Access•Mahdi Alirezazadeh, Hamed Vahdati Nasab et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 35

There have been archaeological and ethnographic reports of artificially modified crania from all continents. Archaeological excavations at the late fifth millennium BCE cemetery of Tol-e Chega Sofla, located southwest of the Iranian plateau, also revealed these crania. This paper uses the morphometric approach to study Tol-e Chega Sofla's modified crania. The outlines of normal and modified crania of Chega Sofla and Khuzestan residents' specimens…

  • New evidence of Pleistocene hominin occupations in Kerman Province, southern Iran

Open Access•Salman Anjomrooz, Hamed Vahdati Nasab et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2022•References: 13

Few systematic investigations of Palaeolithic occupation have been carried out in southern Iran. Here, the authors present the first report from a systematic Palaeolithic survey of a region north of the Strait of Hormuz, providing ample evidence for hominin presence in this area since the Lower Palaeolithic

  • New Approach to Analysis the Middle Paleolithic Points of the Iranian Plateau

Nasim Feizi, Hamed Vahdati Nasab et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 11

Symmetry is a morphological variable that has cognitive significance and is among the most important factors for the manufacture and function of a lithic point. The central idea of this research is that symmetry, alongside the other quantitative variables, plays a role in determining the changing nature of lithic points in the Middle Paleolithic. Accordingly, this investigation takes the form of a case-study of Iranian Middle Paleolithic points f…

  • The first evidence for Late Pleistocene hominin populations on the southern Caspian Sea coast

    Open Access•Hamed Vahdati Nasab, K Roustaei et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2017•References: 2

The southern shore of the Caspian Sea is well known for its great potential in relation to sites of Mesolithic date (e.g. Coon 1951; Jayez & Vahdati Nasab 2016). Situated between two major geographic barriers-the Alborz Mountains to the south, and the Caspian Sea to the north-this area has been considered one of the major hominin dispersal corridors during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition (Vahdati Nasab et al. 2013). Furthermore, the relativel…

Komishan Cave in the southeast of the Caspian Sea was selected for a small excavation in 2009 to address questions concerning the Mesolithic industries of the region. Two AMS dates present an age between 10,628 cal. BC and 11,771 cal. BC for the Mesolithic deposits. The chipped stone assemblage is characterised by large concentration of blade/ lets, notches/ denticulates, scrapers of all forms, especially end scrapers, borers, and backed pieces. …

Hamed Vahdati Nasab, Mandan Kazzazi•ARTICLE•Iran•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Prehistoric human figurines in general and female figurines in particular have been of long-standing interest to archaeologists, but there has been considerable debate about their function. Although early human figurines are often viewed as a corpus, there is considerable variety in body proportions, forms and artistic styles across the vast geographical areas and temporal periods for which they are attested. Here, a metric analysis using the Roo…
