Predicting satisfaction with vocational status among people with serious mental illness in vocational services
The study highlights the importance of perceived skills and support in enhancing satisfaction with vocational status for people with SMI regardless of the vocational service type. Whereas objective factors like employment status and salary contribute to vocational rehabilitation and quality of life, subjective perceptions of skills and support play a significant role in satisfaction with vocational status. The results suggest that vocational reha…
Comparing outcomes of psychiatric rehabilitation between ethnic-religious groups in Israel
Psychiatric rehabilitation for people with severe mental illness (SMI) has many documented benefits, but less is known about cultural related aspects. To date, no comparison of psychiatric rehabilitation outcomes between Israeli Jews and Israeli Arabs has been carried out. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to compare the outcome measures of Israeli Arabs and Israeli Jews consuming psychiatric rehabilitation services. As part of the Israe…
Mental Health Literacy Among General Practitioners in Israel
In recent years, general practitioners (GPs) have become more involved in treating people with mental disorders. This study examined the mental health literacy of GPs in Israel, based on Jorm’s conceptual framework. Twenty-one GPs participated in a semi-structured, in-depth interview. The data were analyzed thematically, guided by Jorm’s six mental health literacy dimensions. The GPs generally reported that they could identify symptoms of mental …

Ethnic group and social support contribution to posttraumatic growth after sudden spousal loss among Jewish, Muslim, and Druze widows in Israel
This study aimed to examine the contribution of ethnic group status and social support to posttraumatic growth (PTG) among widows after sudden spousal loss. Participants included 184 widows from three ethnic groups: 59 (32.3%) Jewish, 58 (31.7%) Muslim, and 66 (36%) Druze. Information was gathered via a demographic questionnaire, PTG Inventory, and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Analysis of covariance was used to test ethnic …
Posttraumatic growth
Contrary to the approach that considers PTG to be an illusion, and possibly even a mechanism that may hinder a return to efficient functioning, the findings of this research suggest that PTG may reflect a growth phenomenon that includes functioning, thus implying a characteristic of the individual's relation to the world. Therefore, it may be concluded that PTG is not an illusion-a process that occurs only in one's head-but rather reflects actual…
Prospective examination of daily life traumatic stress symptom expression following motor vehicle collisions
An early screen of traumatic stress symptoms in the first few days following trauma exposure, together with trauma history and perceived peritraumatic life threat, may assist in identifying individuals at risk for subsequent posttraumatic psychopathology. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
Posttraumatic growth in psychosis
The ability to challenge one's world assumptions and reestablish a functional set of assumptions is critical to the development of PTG. In light of the high levels of posttraumatic comorbidity found in this population, psychiatric facilities should place greater emphasis on treating the traumatic aspects of SMI and on teaching and practicing effective strategies to reevaluate life after trauma. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights r…
The impact of exposure to war and terror on individuals with disabilities
In times of political threat, a lifelong disability is a risk factor for elevated stress-related symptomatology but not for depressive symptoms. The findings emphasize the need to be aware of the effects of life-threatening situations on vulnerable groups, such as people with lifelong disabilities, and to provide services to reduce the level of distress among this population. Enhancing resiliency and promoting prosocial behavior among Tanzanian primary-school students
Children in Sub-Saharan Africa are living under chronic adversity due to poverty, serious health issues, physical and sexual abuse, and armed conflicts. These highly stressful conditions have deleterious effects on their mental health and socio-emotional adjustment. Since many children lack adequate access to mental health care, culturally adapted school-based resiliency programs could provide a resource to scaffold their development and promote …
Posttraumatic Growth in Psychosis
Objective: Recent research has shown high rates of exposure to trauma among people with serious mental illness (SMI). In addition studies suggest that psychosis and mental illness-related experiences can be extremely traumatic. While some individuals develop full blown PTSD related to these experiences, it has been noted that some may also experience posttraumatic growth (PTG). However, few studies have examined PTG as a possible outcome in peopl…

Parenting style, competence, social network and attachment in mothers with mental illness
Severe mental illnesses (SMIs) can affect parents' ability to provide an adequate environment for their children. Little has been written about the different factors that affect these abilities in individuals with SMI. In this study, we explored a number of relationships that have been found in the literature to be related to parenting styles. Our main hypotheses were that the participants' secure attachment with their parents is positively corre…
