  • Rocks and Their Sources in the Upper Paleolithic of the Altai

    Open Access•A V Vishnevsky, N E Belousova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 3

On the basis of the analysis of thin leaf-shaped bifacial points, which are very elaborate and sensitive to the quality of rocks, we reconstruct the adaptive strategies of humans at the early stages of the Upper Paleolithic. Mineral raw materials and their exploitation relating to different resource bases of the central (the Ursul River basin) and northwestern (the Anuy River basin) parts of the Altai region are analyzed. To attribute the rock so…

  • The Results of Experimental Microblade Pressure Flaking on Flint Raw Materials from the Altai Mountains

Svetlana Shnaider, Dmitry Gurulev et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2025

The article presents the results of experimental pressure flaking of flint aimed at the production of microliths. The raw materials used in the experiments are identical to those from the Neolithic and Mesolithic complexes of the Tytkesken-2, 3, 6 and Ust-Biyke-I sites in the Altai Mountains and come from the Katun river terraces at the mouth of the Tytkesken River. A total of 13 experiments were conducted. Seven of them, due to defects in raw ma…

  • Rocks and Their Sources in the Upper Paleolithic of the Altai

    A V Vishnevsky, N E Belousova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2024

  • Kuyacha – a New Late Upper Palaeolithic Site in the Peschanaya River Valley (Altai Mountains)

    Open Access•А Yu Fedorchenko, N E Belousova et al.•ARTICLE•Vestnik NSU Series History and…•2024•References: 8

Purpose . The article is devoted to a comprehensive study of an informative find from the new Kuyacha site in the Peschanaya River valley in the northwestern part of the Altai Mountains, discovered during the survey of the channel alluvium of the left bank of the Kuyacha River in 2022. Results . The artefact under discussion is examined from the point of view of technological and geologicalmineralogical analysis, and its cultural and chronologica…

  • Iron Ore from Mound No. 51 of the Ust-Tartas Burial Ground. Sargat Culture

Open Access•N A Kulik, Viacheslav Molodin et al.•ARTICLE•Vestnik NSU Series History and…•2023

Purpose. The article presents the results of a comprehensive analysis of iron ore fragments found during the explorations of mound no. 51 of the Ust-Tartas site (Vengerovsky distric, Novosibirsk region). The fragments presented shapeless rock debris with ferruginous oxides and a specific. Two fragments turned out to be slag. Three fragments come from burial no. 17 while others were found in the mound fill and the arable layer, obviously moved fro…

  • Initial and Early Upper Palaeolithic “Thin” Leaf-shaped Bifaces

N E Belousova, Natalia Belousova et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2022

The tradition of producing bifacial leafshaped points in Altai demonstrates a relationship with the culture and life support strategies of its earliest Upper Palaeolithic inhabitants. Here we present the reconstruction of bifacial technologies, based on the study of published data and archaeological collections, the latest results of geological and mineralogical data and experiments. The application of the well-known techniques of processing thin…

  • Upper Palaeolithic Bifacial Points from Denisova Cave

    Open Access•N E Belousova, A Mikhienko et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2021

The Altai tradition of manufacturing thin foliate bifacial points and ovoid bifaces demonstrates a clear connection with the culture and subsistence strategies of the most ancient Upper Palaeolithic human population of this region. Today, the issues of cultural and chronological attribution and specificity of this tool category as well as the study of its role in the economic and hunting activities of the population in general require profound st…

  • A Neanderthal Refugium in the Eastern Adriatic

    Open Access•A V Vishnevsky, K K Pavlenok et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 9

On the basis of mineralogical analysis of the tephra layer in the Bioce rock shelter in Montenegro, we revise the cultural and population changes in the eastern Adriatic at the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition. The disappearance of Neanderthals from that region was traditionally attributed to the Campanian Ignimbrite eruption ~40 ka BP. Comprehensive studies at Bioce by the Russian-Montenegrin expedition in 2010-2015 have resulted in a hypo…
