Objective: To co-create with rangatahi (young people) evidence-based eating and wellbeing guidelines for young people in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ), informed by mātauranga Māori (traditional Māori knowledge). Design: Rangatahi collaborated with Māori and non-Māori experts to review existing health guidelines covering sustainable eating, physical activity, screen time, sleep and mental wellbeing and develop their own set of guidelines. Free, healthy school lunches in New Zealand
The use of the Value for Investment approach was key because school lunch programs have many dimensions and the participatory research processes of the approach enabled stakeholders to emphasize the program's wide-ranging social and health benefits while identifying areas for improvement. While Ka Ora, Ka Ako rated very well across most of the 21 value dimensions, there are major concerns that this level of quality will not be upheld under the pr…
Health, wellbeing and nutritional impacts after 2 years of free school meals in New Zealand
In 2020, a government-funded healthy school lunch program was introduced in a quarter of New Zealand schools, selected due to high levels of socio-economic barriers. This study assesses the impact of the introduction of the school lunch program from family (whānau), student and school principal perspectives. Across four schools, we conducted five focus groups (two with secondary students and three with family members) and four school principal in…
“Whiriwhiria, kia ora ai te tamaiti”
This study explores how a purposively selected sample of mainstream primary schools in regional New Zealand incorporate mātauranga Māori (traditional Māori (Indigenous people of New Zealand) knowledge) into school life to support successful learning. Qualitative semi-structured interviews with five principals of low advantage schools with high Māori student populations identified six themes focused on creating a curriculum built around Te Ao Māor…
“We Need a System that’s Not Designed to Fail Māori”
Te Whare Pora a Hine-te-iwaiwa
Te Whare Pora a Hine-te-iwaiwa (Te Whare Pora), a Māori (Indigenous peoples of Aotearoa (New Zealand)) approach to the prevention of sudden infant death, posits that immersion in traditional knowledge and the weaving of the wahakura (woven flax bassinet) as a safe infant sleep space boosts the resilience of pregnant wāhine Māori (Māori women) and the post-neonatal safety of their infants. Our data are drawn from the observations, conversations an…
Applying the complementary knowledge bases of System Dynamics and Indigenous knowledge in public health research in Aotearoa, New Zealand
Systems Thinking is increasingly applied to address complex societal and public health issues in Aotearoa, New Zealand and has been proposed as a good fit with traditional wisdom and Mātauranga Māori (Indigenous knowledge) from Aotearoa, New Zealand. In this article, we delve into the theoretical underpinnings of Systems Thinking approaches used in Community-Based System Dynamics research and find parallels with Indigenous narratives and knowledg…
Culture of Healthy Eating and Food Environments, Policies, and Practices in Regional New Zealand Schools
The school food environment plays an important role in shaping students' dietary choices, which often influence future dietary behaviours. We surveyed primary and secondary schools in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, to measure the comprehensiveness and strength of food policies, describe the culture of food provision, and identify barriers to improving school food environments. Fifty-one schools were included in the final analysis, with 58.8% having a …
Community Co-Design of Regional Actions for Children’s Nutritional Health Combining Indigenous Knowledge and Systems Thinking
Children's nutrition is highly influenced by community-level deprivation and socioeconomic inequalities and the health outcomes associated, such as childhood obesity, continue to widen. Systems Thinking using community-based system dynamics (CBSD) approaches can build community capacity, develop new knowledge and increase commitments to health improvement at the community level. We applied the formal structure and resources of a Group Model Build…
Healthy Food Environments in Early Learning Services
Healthy food environments in early childhood play an important role in establishing health-promoting nutritional behaviours for later life. We surveyed Early Learning Services (ELS) in the Hawke’s Bay region of New Zealand and describe common barriers and facilitators to providing a healthy food environment, through descriptive survey analysis and thematic analysis of open-ended questions. We used a policy analysis tool to assess the strength and…
The impact of the Covid-19 level 4 lockdown on food security among whānau of decile 1 schools
Interviews with stakeholders in deprived Hawke’s Bay schools early in the COVID-19 lockdown documented exacerbated food insecurity among school whānau. Our enquiry highlights the support role played by well-informed teacher aides and school–whānau networks, which were easily and inexpensively resourced, intuitive, proactive and collaborative, ensuring whānau access to appropriate support according to need. We expect our findings to further inform…
Why cultural safety rather than cultural competency is required to achieve health equity
Ngāti and healthy
Community-wide lifestyle interventions have the potential to reduce rates of type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases in high-risk communities, but require a high level of commitment from the health sector and buy-in from the community. Adequate commitment, leadership, planning and resources are essential
Narratives of deprivation
Maori Men and the Grief of Sids
The loss of a baby is always hard to cope with and the grieving process is likely to be difficult. Interventions to work with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) families have improved grieving outcomes for many but the needs of Maori fathers are not well understood or catered to by existing services. This article presents narrative data from Maori fathers who have lost a baby to SIDS and analyzes these narratives in the context of the literature…
