Indigenous collective land titling and the creation of leftovers
Collective land titling often drags on for decades, while private land concessions and holdings do not face the same problem, creating ‘leftovers’ of land available for Indigenous peoples to attempt to collectively title. The fieldwork of never alone
When the author returned from her ethnographic fieldwork in Paraguay, she felt disoriented and unsure of her findings. In order to re-engage with anthropological writings, she returned to researchers whose work she admired. The author selected an ethnographer with extensive fieldwork experience in a nearby region, whose theoretical work she drew upon leading up to her field research. This paper documents aftermaths of Indigenous collective land titling in Northern Paraguay, drawing on participant observation, interviews, and archives involving Indigenous Guarani, private landholders, NGO partners, and campesinos. While collective title attempts to safeguard Indigenous land, I argue that land available for Paĩ Tavyterã Guarani livelihoods was reduced, with sometimes violent sociopolitical impacts and challenges to land control…
