  • Combining trauma therapy with computer-based neurocognitive training in soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder

Open Access•Patric Muschner, Lena Goldschmidt et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

C-bnt was associated with modest, domain-specific reductions in PTSD-related avoidance and depressive symptoms at post-treatment, while no improvements in verbal or visuospatial long-term memory performance were observed. Symptom relief may thus be based on intermingled changes of diverse cognitive resources and emotional processes. We suggest that c-bnt may serve as a low-threshold adjunct to trauma-focused therapy, that may help to improve heal…

  • Cumulative Incidence of Mental Disorders Among German Military Personnel Deployed to Iraq 2015–2018—An Epidemiological Study

Open Access•Ulrich Wesemann, Karl-Heinz Renner et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Investigation…•2025

Background: There is currently no study examining the mental health consequences of deployed German service members in Iraq. The aim is, therefore, to determine the cumulative incidence and latency period until the first diagnosis of deployment-related mental disorders. We hypothesized a lower rate than for Afghanistan with 2.4%. Methods: All registered N = 1635 German military personnel who were deployed to the mission “Training support continge…

  • Psychological distress across the deployment cycle

Open Access•Antje Bühler, Antje H Bühler et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

To prevent military personnel from becoming vectors of SARS-CoV-2 transmission during the pandemic, soldiers throughout the world were required to quarantine before and after deployment. This study examined whether deployment-related quarantining affected trajectories of psychological distress for German military personnel throughout the deployment cycle. Pandemic-specific mental health studies were criticised for lacking a pre-pandemic reference…

  • Burnout and moral injuries after foreign deployment among medical personnel of the German armed forces

Open Access•Franziska Langner, Anna Katharina Börke et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

The results indicate that medical service soldiers exhibit mild to moderate burnout symptoms even before deployment. Significant associations between moral injuries and burnout were found in 3 out of 4 MBI subscales (EE, DP, INV). There was a significant association with a stronger moral injury and higher burnout levels, persisting both before and after the study period. Furthermore, our results suggest that personal value orientations might be m…

  • Deployment-related quarantining—a risk or resilience factor for German military service members? A prospective analysis during the third–fifth waves of Covid-19

Open Access•Antje Bühler, Antje H Bühler et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Background Mandatory deployment-related quarantining added further constraints on soldiers during the pandemic. Contrary to overwhelming research documenting an adverse impact of quarantining on mental health, no adverse short-term mental health effects of pre-deployment quarantining for German soldiers were identified. Therefore, we are interested in a potentially delayed onset, the impact of an additional post-deployment quarantine, and quarant…

  • Mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic

    Open Access•Vincent M E L Nin, Vincent Nin et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Clinical observations indicate that people frequently display stress-related behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although numerous studies have been published concerning pandemic-related psychological distress, systematic data on the interrelationships between stress sensitivity, personality, and behavioral characteristics of people are still lacking. In the present cross-sectional online survey study, we applied a German version of the COVID …

  • The impact of the pandemic on the perception of stress and danger, and the adjustment of psychiatric and general medical staff of German military hospitals

    Open Access•Gerd Willmund, Gerd-Dieter Willmund et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

The presented results must be interpreted while taking the unique situations of German military clinics into account. The supply of protective material was sufficient and there was no dramatic shortage of psychiatric staff during the pandemic. The inpatients were quite often (40%) elective treatments for trauma-related disorders, which could be discontinued in the case of a COVID-19 infection. The results of this study showed good adaptative skil…

  • Adherence and Psychosocial Well-Being During Pandemic-Associated Pre-deployment Quarantine

Open Access•Antje Bühler, Gerd Willmund et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Background: With the purpose of preventing SARS-Cov-2 traveling with the troops, pre-deployment and post-deployment quarantine are mandatory for the German military. This study investigates which factors could be addressed in order to facilitate adherence and mental health during isolation. Method: Six hundred three soldiers completed questionnaires at the beginning and at the end of pre-deployment quarantine: Mini-SCL (BSI), Perceived Social Sup…
